Q: What are the skills, knowledge, and abilities required to be an effective human resource professional?   A: To be successful as a human resource professional you need to have several skills, knowledge, and abilities. I will name all the ones that I find most important. The most important in my opinion is that the professional needs to have great communication skills. Most HR jobs require you to communicate with others in some way. An HR professional also needs to have empathy. It helps you make better decisions, and you see things from a different perspective. Multitasking skills are a important skill to have as an HR professional because you have many different responsibilities. Lastly, they need to have an unbiased decision-making approach to scenarios in the workplace. It is crucial to be understanding of situations based on fact/policy and not opinion.   Q: How is the human resources department structured? Who is responsible for the different functions of the department and what are some of their responsibilities?   A: The most common HR department uses a hierarchical structure. Which means that everyone reports to only one person. There are many different functions of an HR department such as recruiting, employee relations, compensation and benefits, training, safety, employee wellness, regulations/law monitoring. Recruiting employees would be done by an HR professional with the job title as Recruiter. They are responsible for finding people who are the best fit for the job. The person who oversees rules/laws and regulations is called a Human resources generalist. They oversee reports and compliance, employee safety and welfare. The professional who oversees employee relations is called the employee relations manager. They work to have a smooth work environment by helping with conflict resolution or if need be, negotiation.   Q: What is your role in managing and enforcing health care quality standards, such as those put in place by The Joint Commission or the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services? Are there other quality standard organizations you interact with?   A: As an HR professional it would be my job to ensure that the employees are ensuring that the patients are safe. We would do this by having training and policies in place during onboarding about giving quality care to our patients. We are also responsible for the educational competence of the healthcare professional providing the patient with the correct care. We are also responsible for our employees providing equal care to all patients regardless of their background. We can teach the healthcare professionals all these standards by addressing our vision up front in on-boarding and also implementing training
