Assignment 8: Lab Impressions Zachary Cooper Harding Operating Systems: ISSC242 Doctor Adam Rutherford May 28, 2023
2 Assignment 8 Different types of learners exist. Some learn by doing, some learn by reading, some learn by seeing. The labs in the class allowed for methods to be mixed and provide a more hands on approach to learning about hardening an operating system. This is done in an entirely virtual environment which comes with a plethora of benefits. Some labs were different than others and some provided more assistance in learning. A benefit of the virtual environment is that the work can be done without consequence. When a mistake is made, it does not have catastrophic consequences. Instead, the mistake can be redone, or the lab can be reset to start over. This allows for a learning experience to hash through mistakes and avoid making them again in the future. Another benefit is the virtual environment’s ability to replicate a Windows environment even on a Macbook. My use of iOS devices has created issues in some classes, and I have needed to use my own virtual machine, Parallels. The virtual environment here only needed to ensure the host OS could run the VM. The labs were in depth and provided a lot of information with a downside being the specifics to a certain Windows OS. Now with Windows 11 being prevalent across much of what I use for work, the virtual environment does not exactly line up. There are definite similarities between the two Windows operating systems. Using Powershell and the command prompt was often an issue and took a lot of trial and error to get the scripts correct. The left pane would show what to type but the spaces did not always line up, especially when moving to another line. Another issue is the lack of troubleshooting if a step could not be completed. An option to “try *this* if it does not work” concept would be beneficial. The most beneficial labs were the combination of the first two weeks labs. These labs covered access control and assisted me in my understanding of delineating user access to the
