DAT530 5-1 Exercise
Presentation and Visualization of Data
AUDIENCE 1 – BUYERS
New Chart type: Treemap
Audience: Buyers. Visualization Style and Elements Chosen: I originally chose the donut chart in Unit 4 but changed to the treemap for Unit 5. Where the donut chart was also colorful, I feel as though the treemap quickly identifies the manufacturers that have the highest amounts of affected units. This gives a hierarchical view, and it easily allows you to see a part-to-whole snapshot when you have many categories as we do here. The colors are vibrant, and the shape is clean and crisp. “
While treemaps may seem like a sexy choice for visualizing data, they’re often used when another chart type would serve the data better. The limitation is that when we’re encoding data with area and intensity of color, our eyes aren’t great a detecting relatively minor differences in
either of these dimensions. If our data is such that our audience needs to make precise comparisons between categories, it’s even more cumbersome when the categories aren’t aligned to a common baseline. We should never make our audience do more work than necessary to understand a graph!” (Ricks, E., 2018).
AUDIENCE 2 – MANUFACTURERS
Chart type: Waterfall Chart
Audience: Manufacturers Visualization Style and Elements Chosen: The visualization I close originally was the table but I
have changed to the waterfall chart. Where the table can be overwhelmed with data the waterfall chart shows a clear and simple structure and it transforms data well. Visually the colors allow the
eye to easily see and determine what you are looking at. The shape, where it mirrors a column chart. The position of the data is easily understood. The disadvantages of the waterfall model
