2 The Learner-Guided Approach to Teaching There are three components to the learner-guided approach to teaching: training guides, self-directed learning, and the use of smart technologies. Each of these components, when utilized together, have shown to be a more successful model when on the job training is required. Below the topics will be discussed in further depth, as well as how to incorporate them into an organization, and finally discussion on the use of technology to enhance the training experience. Training guides are an excellent tool to incorporate with a learner-guided approach to teaching. They provide a organize map that the employee can use to progress within the required specialties of their employment. Each training component can be designed so that it builds on the one previous and expands on the knowledge needed to be successful. An example of this is within the firefighting training program, recruits first learn the chemical properties of fire and what fire needs to exist. Following the techniques to effectively extinguish the fire by chemical and physical means. However, once this training is utilized, the student will be required to maintain certain trainings up to date, which utilizes a self-directed learning method. Self-directed learning is a system where the employee can continue or complete required trainings at their own pace. This gives the learner the ability to focus on areas where mastery is not yet met, and bypass areas which it has. The learner has more control over their own training and development within the system, which can give the learner a more positive moral within the profession. Within the firefighting community, a recruit who is assigned to an apparatus, must
3 complete a task book over the course of several months. How quickly or slowly they complete it is up to the learner. This type of training allows the recruit to have a more active role in their development within the company. An excellent tool to assist the recruit is the use of smart technologies. Smart technologies provide an excellent tool for training and advancement. According to Cox (2016) technology serves multiple roles. The first is to gather information through online and email sources as tools for learning. The other is to help manage learning outcomes (p9). Many companies utilize programs like Vector Solutions to assist with continuing education and specific trainings for their organization. The use of technologies can elevate trainings outside of practical evolutions and standard book studies allowing for the student to retain the information potentially better. The challenge any organization would have is the implementation of this type of learning into their current training programs. According to Greany (2021), employee training can help improve employee engagement, increase retention, productivity, efficiency, and innovation. One method to implement training, is to review the needs for the positions. Once the requirements of the career are established, the training program can be molded to fit that field. When developing a guide for the training, the lead for the program can develop the training based on immediate concepts to lesser concepts. This is so the learner addresses the main tasks of the field and then can be trained on lesser or more specific areas to follow. An example of this is in sales, teaching the pertinent information about the product so the employee can sell it, and then work on additional training on selling techniques. In sales, you need to be extremely familiar with the product, then you can refine the selling techniques. Another method for training is employee focused. All persons learn differently whether verbal, visual, etc. Developing a program for the
