2 MBA 580: Innovation and Strategy for High-Performance Organizations Module Eight Benchmark Study Organizational Structure The organizational structure of the Skunk Works innovation team at Lockhead is a bit unorganized at first glance . Compared to the course organizational structure , Skunk Works lacks the defining structure of a definite leader , manager , etc . Skunk Works doesn t seem to even have a set structure to be conducive to working on innovative products . The group is placed into a less than sterile environment and small groups are enlisted to develop ideas and projects for the company . The lack of hierarchy within the Lockhead company makes it difficult to assign and review projects with definite deadlines ensuring certain milestones are met . The major difference in both projects is that with the automobile company , innovation is greater through structure . However , within the auto company , due to strict structuring , ideas are restricted and often ignored due to lack of freedom . With the auto company , decision on innovative projects is decided with little to no input from the team and changes are made based on the success of the project and team . With Skunk Works it s the exact opposite , which allows for a more open and honest atmosphere . Shared Vision With the automobile company , the vision is shared as a means to an end . In order to be successful in the career/company one must understand and envelop the goal of the stakeholders and owners of the company . The longevity of the company within the auto company is the common shared vision to complete and create innovative projects . For the Skunk Works , it seems that those who create innovative projects are rewarded and promoted . While the automobile company lags the freedom for one to be selfish in being innovative , it gives the culture of the company a sense of “togetherness . ” In other words , the auto industry creates on the
