Reflection: Reflecting on Your Progress
Currently I have 633/636 points. This is because I have just submitted my work for Week 7, so it
has not been updated yet. The 3 points that I am missing are for enrolling in my classes for next semester.
I cannot enroll yet because it opens on October 9th. Overall, I think that I am doing very well. I have been
staying on top of my classwork and I am about one week ahead. This weekend I plan on doing at least 2
more weeks of work. I just started two more classes online at Lonestar, so my workload is very heavy
right now. I want to get as far ahead in this class as possible, so that I can spend more time studying for
my Chemistry and Algebra exams.

You work in a research organization that is looking for markers of various diseases that can be used as a diagnostic for the disease. It has been reported in the past that high levels of Cu are found in the sweat of people with cystic fibrosis. One of the research projects is focused on looking for high levels of Cu in samples that can be obtained non-invasively such as saliva, sweat, hair, nails, etc.
The lab will analyze large samples for Cu. What instrument would you recommend purchasing to support this work, Atomic absorption spectrophotometer or an inductively coupled plasma atomic spectrophotometer? Explain the basis for your decision.

O THERMOCHEMISTRY
Understanding the definitions of heat and work
A mixture of gaseous reactants is put into a cylinder, where a chemical reaction turns them into gaseous products. The
1 atm pressure
cylinder has a piston that moves in or out, as necessary, to keep a constant pressure on the mixture of 1 atm. The
cylinder is also submerged in a large insulated water bath. (See sketch at right.)
The temperature of the water bath is monitored, and it is determined from this data that 259. kJ of heat flows into the
system during the reaction. The position of the piston is also monitored, and it is determined from this data that the
piston does 322. kJ of work on the system during the reaction.
