Avery O’Brien CHEM343-76 Prelab Questions for Isolation of Essential Oils via Steam Distillation (15 pts) (1) Draw a picture of the set-up that will be used for the steam distillation of the essential oils cinnamaldehyde and eugenol. Label all glassware and other items used. (2) When is a steam distillation used? Steam distillation is used when typical high-temperature distillations could decompose the material being distilled. (3) You are told to heat the sand bath to 150-160°C. The actual distillation temperature in your flask will be around 100°C. Why is it not higher? The temperature is not higher because it only needs to be distilled at just below the boiling point of water. (4) IR spectroscopy will be used to determine if product was obtained. List 2 absorptions that you expect to see for each compound and say what functional group/bond is responsible for those absorptions. Cinnamaldehyde will exhibit absorptions at 2800 and 2900 from the fermi doublet and 1675 from the carbonyl stretch. Eugenol will exhibit absorptions at 3500-3200 from the OH phenolic stretch and 1270 from the C-O-C alkyl aryl stretch.
