Alexis Grant Laboratory 2: Proteins and Starches Purpose: Determine the substances that are proteins and the ones that are starches. Hypothesis: I think that 1 or 2 of each substance in the test tubes for both protein and starch will test positive for either protein or starch. Materials: - Di water - Evaporated milk - 50% egg solution - 1% sucrose - 4 test tubes - 1 test tube rate - Safety glasses - Pipets - Reagent solution - 1% starch solution - Onion juice - Surose solution - Iodine reagent - Test tube rack and pipets Methods Section and Results: Each solution was placed in its own test tube with the reagent in it. The test for proteins, each substance had showed a purple color which is a positive result for proteins. Blue indicates a negative for proteins. The test tube with Di water was a blue color once the reagent was added. The test tube with the Evaporated milk then the reagent added, resulted in a milky purple. The test tube containing the egg solution which was test tube 3 had turned purple once the reagent was added. For test tube 4
which is the last one, it contained sucrose and it turned light blue once the reagent was added indicating a negative result. For starch, Di water was the control group. The first test tube had a yellow color and a negative test. The second test tube had 1% starch and it indicated a light purple color when the iodine reagent was added. The iodine reagent is the only reagent that would reflect the traces of starch. In test tube 3 there was the onion juice which turned yellow when iodine was added. In the last test tube there was sucrose solution and it turned yellow as well. Conclusion: For both the starch and the protein tests , the results was just what I thought they would be.
