pH and Buffer Worksheet Name:___Isaiah Reichenbach______ 1) Complete the following table to review the information on acids, bases and pH (3pts) Table 3. Acid and Base Interrelationships [H + ] [OH - ] pH pOH acidic, basic or neutral 10 -3 M 10 -11 M 3 11 Acidic 10 -12 M 10 -2 M 12 2 Basic 10 -8 M 10 -6 M 8 6 Basic 10 -10 M 10 -4 M 10 4 Basic 10 -7 M 10 -7 M 7 7 Neutral 2) (4pts) What is the hypothesis that you tested? What is the null hypothesis? The increasing amount of lemon drops on a solution will decrease the pH over time. pH will decrease with increase of lemon drops. 3) (0pts) What unknown did you have? A or B A 4) (4pts) Create a graph using Excel file attached to show your results of the difference between water and buffer as well as your unknown. Be sure it is complete and labeled appropriately. 5) 6) (2pts) Based on the data you have recorded and graphed, do you accept or reject your hypothesis? Write a brief statement below about how your results lead you to either accept or reject your hypothesis. The hypothesis was accepted as the pH levels started to become more acidic with the addition of more lemon drops.
7) (4pts) What was the identity of your unknown (1pt)? How do you know (3pts)? Water, because it had similar physical characteristics and pH levels. 8) (3 points) Did the pH of the buffer solution drop dramatically at some point during your experiment? Show this point on the graph. Please explain why this happened. Yes, at the final point between 15 and 20 drops is when it changed the most. This is because more acidity was started to form in the solution dropping its pH level.
