Formula for Calculating Peds Maintenance Fluids
The following formula must be used:
1
st
1-10 kg x 100 mL
Weight of child is >10kg
2
nd
12-20 kg x 50 mL
Weight of child > 20kg
3
rd
>20 kg x 20 mL
Example 1 (Full Maintenance)
: A 25 kg child is to receive maintenance fluids over 24 hrs. Determine total
volume to be infused and the rate of the infusion (pump rate).
10 kg x 100 mL = 1000 mL
10 kg x 50 mL =
500 mL
5 kg x 20 mL
=
100 ml
_______
1600 mL (total
volume
answer
)
÷
24 hrs = 66.66 =
67
ml/hr
(infusion
rate
answer)
Example 2 (½ Maintenance):
The order is to give ½ maintenance fluids to your child who weighs 20 kg to be
infused over 24 hours. Determine the total volume to be infused and rate of infusion (mL/hr).
Same formula is used 10 kg x 100 mL = 1000 mL
10 kg x 50 mL =
500 mL
______
1500 mL (total volume) x 0.5(1/2 fluids) =
750
mL (total volume answer ½)
750 mL (total volume)
÷
24 (infusion time) = 31.25 or
31 mL/hr (infusion rate answer)
Example 3 (1.5 Maintenance):
The child’s weight is 35 lbs., and the order is to give 1 ½ maintenance fluids over
12 hours. Determine the total volume to be infused and rate of infusion (mL/hr).
Same formula is used but first need to convert the 35lbs to kg. 1kg/2.2 lbs. and 35 lbs./1 = 35/2.2=
15.9
kg(wt.)
10kg x 100mL = 1000 mL
5.9 x
50 mL =
295 mL
_________
1295 (total volume) x 1.5 (1.5 fluids) =
1942.5
mL (total volume answer 1.5)
1942.5
÷
12

A variation of the indicator-dilution method (see preceding problem) is used to measure total blood volume. A known amount of a tracer is injected into the bloodstream and disperses uniformly throughout the circulatory system. A blood sample is then withdrawn, the tracer concentration in the sample is measured, and the measured concentration [which equals (tracer injected)/(total blood volume) if no tracer is lost through blood vessel walls] is used to determine the total blood volume. In one such experiment, 0.60 cm3 of a solution containing 5.00 mg/L of a dye is injected into an artery of a grown man. About 10 minutes later, after the tracer has had time to distribute itself uniformly throughout the bloodstream, a blood sample is withdrawn and placed in the sample chamber of a spectrophotometer. A beam of light passes through the chamber, and the spectrophotometer measures the intensity of the transmitted beam and displays the value of the solution absorbance (a quantity that…
