Lab 1: Lab Safety
Learning Objectives
Use the correct clothing to work in the lab
Describe the do’s and don’ts in a laboratory
Correctly use the lab safety equipment
React in an emergency situation
Introduction: About Lab safety virtual simulations lab
Laboratories can be very dangerous, especially if you’ve never set foot in one before. So in this
simulation, you’ll get the chance to make your debut in a virtual one! You will learn how to use
the lab safety equipment, and how to react in case of an emergency. Detect and eliminate
sources of danger and pass on your lab safety knowledge to friends.
Identify hazards
Safety first! Always pay attention to potential hazards when you enter a lab. In this simulation,
you will create a tidy and safe working environment by identifying and eliminating hazards in
the lab. You will be introduced to the lab safety rules and the safety equipment, which will help
you and your colleagues, if something was to go wrong in a real lab.
Emergency training
You will be introduced to the basic hazard symbols used to categorize dangerous materials.
You’ll use this knowledge to prevent dangerous situations, like acid spills. But you will also learn
how to deal with unlabeled, potentially hazardous chemicals. By mastering such situations in
this simulation, you won’t have to worry about being exposed to any real danger. You will learn
how to operate the eye-wash and also get an introduction to various other pieces of lab safety
equipment
.
Spread your knowledge
It is important to share your newly acquired knowledge with your colleagues. In this simulation,
you will meet your friend Lucy who’s never worked in a lab before. Pass on your lab safety
knowledge and help her dress appropriately for a day in the lab.
Will you be able to apply your knowledge, and make sure that you and your friend stay safe in
the laboratory?
1.
Purpose: Please describe in complete sentences and in your own words, the purpose of
this experiment.
The purpose of this lab was to obtain a clear understanding on lab safety.

2.
Why is it important to wear closed toe shoes in lab?
Closed toe shoes can serve as a barrier between skin and hazardous chemicals. It is
important to wear closed toe shoes to prevent injuries.
3.
What is the importance of cleaning work bench before and after use?
Disinfecting the work bench is important to ensure all hazardous materials are removed prior to
working with other materials that may cause negative interactions.
4.
If you have spillage or work bench contamination, what are the steps required to make
the surface sterile again?
Inform the instructor, follow step on MSDS.
Take a pipette and drop solution on the spill to see if it is acidic or a base. Use baking soda to
neutralize if acidic. After it is neutralized, clean up the spill with an absorption napkin and
properly dispose.
5.
What are the different types of hazardous material generated in Micro lab? Give some
ways of their proper disposal.
Agar with bacteria presented is an example of hazardous material generated in Micro Lab. The
best way to dispose of it is to throw it away in a biohazard bin.
6.
Write a reflection on this lab exercise- 5 sentences on what you learned with this
simulation.
It is important to know how to clean spills, put out fires, and what proper PPE to use prior to
working. Proper PPE can prevent chemicals and other hazardous materials from getting on your
clothes, in your eyes, and on your skin. Always inform your instructor on spills no matter what
the substance is. When using the fire blanket, ensure that the purpose in need is lying on the
ground and not standing up. Always test to see if spills are acidic or a base prior to cleaning. The
pH determines how you should properly clean it up.

Please introduce your thoughts and discuss Chemistry and Food.
How does Chemistry affect the Food supply, production, storage, transportation, availability, quality, quantity, etc.
Are there any issues with Chemistry involved in all stages of food production?
Do you think Chemistry is doing more harm than good or it is the other way around?
If so, what are the alternatives?
Do you think educating general public in the field of Chemistry helps people understand more about Chemistry's impact on food?
Provide at least two references in your original 300 words post.

Like anatomy and physiology, chemistry may be a somewhat scary subject for you. Think of it this way: Chemistry is simply the study of matter, its composition, structure, properties, and the changes matter may undergo. Your goal in training as a cosmetologist is not to become a scientist, but to develop a comfort level with the basics and an ability to discuss chemistry in relation to your profession. This will increase your credibility significantly with your clients, especially during the consultation process.
In the space provided, write how chemistry affects your everyday life.
