Hunter Mlady Chapter 2 Case Study: Kevin at the Crossroads TAS-37900 1) I believe that Kevin has adopted a boundaryless career without a protean one. Because protean careers are value driven and Kevin seems to clearly value his family and the time he shares with them, I find it had to define his career path as protean. 2) I think Kevin more than likely does see his career thus far as a success. Having worked his way through a single company for as long as he has and earning the salary he does, should be valued as a success in itself. 3) The biggest nonwork factor that is influencing Kevin’s career choices is his family. Ultimately, spending more time with his family and being there as a father is what is primarily deterring Kevin from the possible promotion in Brazil as well as his current position as a whole. 4) Personally, and contrary to what may be popular belief, I don’t believe Kevin’s age is influencing his career questionings. I think he’s just realizing that this is no longer what he wants out of his life. Things like family and overall happiness are becoming more of a priority to him. 5) If Kevin sought my help, I’d advise him to follow his heart. If I were in the same position, I think I’d start by declining the promotion in Brazil simply because I cannot ask my family to uproot themselves from their current lives. And I certainly could not live in another country that’s hundreds of miles away. That just wouldn’t be an option. However, I do think that I would do whatever it took to have the best of both worlds. I think quitting your job and accepting a new position as a teacher may be over doing it. I have to believe there are ways to continue working for XO and still being there my
family. If there isn’t, ultimately family is the more important of the two and maybe looking at a new position at a similar company might be the way to go.
