Milestone Two Briana Fuller Southern New Hampshire University CHE 220: Communicable Disease Dr. Helvey November 19, 2023
Health workers and family members who do not use proper infection control while caring for patients with suspected or confirmed Ebola disease are at the highest risk of getting sick. Ebolaviruses can spread when people come into contact with infected blood or body fluids (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023). Proper personal protective equipment is necessary to protect against virus spread within a hospital setting. The virus can spread via contact with broken skin and mucous membranes, so extra precautions need to be taken when handling needles, bedding, and medical equipment that is used by a patient with or expected to have the virus. Sub-populations for those at elevated risk were not found.
From the time the Ebola virus was first discovered in Africa in 1976 until 2014, there have been 1,640 reported deaths. The graph, however, only includes years where 50 or more deaths were reported (NPS, 2014). The 2014 outbreak was responsible for nearly one-third of the total number of deaths. The rate of positive cases was rapidly increasing at a weekly rate during the largest outbreak of Ebola since it was first discovered. The chart shows us that there is a lack of a distinct pattern. The number of deaths rose and fell until the large outbreak in 2014 that more than doubled the initial year’s numbers. Unfortunately, there is no way to predict when the next large outbreak will be, but it is surely coming. With appropriate vaccines, medical protocols, and protective equipment and supplies, this should assist with keeping the next outbreak as small as possible.
