Article Worksheet 3: Tenney et al. (2007)
Write as much as needed to answer the question.
1.
What was the main purpose of this article? (2 pts)
The main purpose of this article was to investigate how confidence and errors affect the credibility of witnesses in mock legal judgments. 2.
In Experiment 1
, what were the two independent
variables? (2pts)
The two independent variables, in Experiment 1, were levels of confidence that the witness had (high vs. low) and levels of error that the witness had (no error vs. error).
3.
In Experiment 2
, what were the two dependent
variables (2 pts)
The two dependent variables, in Experiment 2, were preference judgments and credibility judgments. The preference judgments were the participants’ choice of which witness they believed. The credibility judgments were the participants’ ratings of the witnesses’ credibility and choice of which one they believed.
4.
What do the results of each experiment tell us? What’s the overall take home message? (3pts)
The results of Experiment 1 indicate that credibility judgments and verdicts are influenced by the confidence and errors of witnesses. Experiment 1 showed that when no
error was made the confident witness was rated as more credible, but when an error was made the unconfident witness was rated as more credible. Moreover, when there was no error, the confident witness was chosen to be convicted more often, but when there was error, the unconfident witness was chosen more often to be convicted.
The results for experiment 2 demonstrate that confidence level and errors influence preference judgements and credibility judgements. In Time 1 (before error), participants sided with the confident witness more than with the unconfident witness. In Time 2 (after error) participants then considered the unconfident witness to be more credible. Overall, there is an interaction between the accuracy of a person and their confidence level that affects judgments that others create. Specifically, a high-confidence error is likely to diminish credibility of other statements.
Vice versa, an unconfident error can make a future high-confidence claim more credible. In conclusion, the degree of confidence of an individual must be expressed carefully or it will cause doubt affecting the judgments of others.
5.
What did you like, or dislike, about this paper? (1pt)
I dislike that this paper does not have the results and discussion sections separated. Usually, papers have the results section which includes all the statistics and then a discussion section which breaks down all the statistics. When a paper has both sections, it makes it easier for the readers to read and understand the findings. However, I did like
that the paper was relatively short but was still very detailed. The researchers were able to describe their experiment and discuss their findings effectively and efficiently.

Analytical chemistry is a particular field within the broader spectrum of the chemical sciences, in which many times the focus of analytical experiments is to develop new methods to analyze compounds, either structurally or by determining concentrations of compounds. One of the processes analytical chemists use to determine the exact concentration of a working solution is called standardization. In your own words, describe the differences between a primary, secondary, and tertiary standard, and describe the underlying concept behind the standardization process. Why is it done?
