I have had the opportunity to work in positive and negative school cultures and the difference that can be seen is incredible. As a Principal, my ideal culture in a school would be one of positivity that could be felt throughout the building and amongst staff and students. This type of feeling allows for an energy that is contagious and supports the eagerness for everyone to
grow. My professional norms would be the following:
Trust and Collaboration
Respect of diversity amongst teachers and students
Celebrate success
Encourage and set a goal of high expectation
When creating my vision of a culture within a building, the first thing I would do is observe the current culture and take notes as to what the staff and students currently do that supports my vision and what areas may need improvement. After that I would create a team of current staff members that appear to be leaders in the school along with parents, students and community members to help me create the final vision for the school culture. The launch of this new vision would include all staff and students along with the community so I could capture as much buy in as possible. The important thing is for everyone to feel like they are part of the vision and it was made to create success for everyone. Monitoring school culture can be done in a few different ways. I would compare discipline data between the previous school culture versus the current culture that my vision has created. Another idea is to use surveys which are a quick way to gage how staff, students and families are
feeling. Lastly and probably most importantly, I would walk around my school and visit classrooms. I strongly feel that the climate of a school can be felt within the halls and classrooms
and watching the interaction between staff and students.
