Paulina Jimenez March 14 , 2024 CHEM 1107 Experimental Protocol: Extracting the Polymer 1. We begin by cutting one side of the diaper off, and it opened, inside the diaper we should see some grainy material, and we will try to extract as much possible into our colored paper. 2. Now that our polymer is mixed with our powdery cotton residue we will sift it, and the cotton residue will go to the trash. 3. Now we will measure our polymer residue which we got a total of 1.43 grams. Making indicator solution 1. We will need a large beaker, a smaller one, a hot place, some deionized water, and red cabbage. 2. To begin we poured 300 milliliters of water into the large beaker, and place it on the hot plate, and let it boil, as it boils, we rip some leaves from the cabbage and place them inside the beaker. 3. After 5 minutes it should start looking like a purple color, we turn off our hot plate, and let it cool off. 4. After 20 minutes once it’s cool, we will strain our solution into the smaller beaker. Polymer with Water 1. We will need a spatula, a scale, two cups, a graduated cylinder, the polymer we extracted, tap water and deionized water. 2. We will turn our scale on, place our cup on top of it, and measured 0.36 grams of polymer. 3. We will now take our graduated cylinder and we added 49 mL of water and record our volume. 4. Now we will transfer into our polymer, and swirl it, and now we will add other 50 millimeters of deionized water so repeat the process, now 30, 20, 10 and 5 mL a total of 115 mL of water. 5. We need to swirl it until we see that all the water is gone and add more water until it is fully dissolved. 6. Now we will measure how much water was absorbed, press tare, place the cup on top and now we can record our mass which we got a total weight of 159.57 grams. Adding Salt to Soaked Polymer 1. For this experiment we will need our two cups with our soaked polymers with water, and some salt. 2. We will begin with our polymer that was soaked on the deionized water and we will add small amounts of salt. We should start seeing the top layer clearing up, swirl it a little bit. 3. Now we will do the same thing with the tap water, swirl it a little bit, and we should start seeing our polymer release some of our water. Polymer with Indicator
1. We will need some pipettes, a scale, a beaker (250 mL), a graduated cylinder, spatula, a piece of white paper, a petri dish, our diaper polymer, our indicator solution, baking soda solution, vinegar, and some lemon juice. 2. To begin we will turn our scale place our beaker on top of it and add our diaper polymer and record our mass which was 0.35 grams of polymer. 3. We will now measure 50 millimeters of our indicator solution using our graduated cylinder and add it to our diaper polymer and swirl it. 4. Now we will place our petri dish on our piece of paper and with our spatula we will transfer three mounds of the indicator separated from each other. 5. Now to each mound we will add a drop of our chemical which will be lemon juice and we should see a color change; we will now add vinegar to the next piece and add some baking soda to the last one. Determining pH Using Indicator Solution 1. We will need three test tubes, 4 pipettes (3 for the different test tubes) and one to transfer the indicator solution, lemon juice, vinegar, baking soda (with water), and our indicator solution. 2. For the first test tube we will put some vinegar into the test tube and get the other pipette to transfer some indicator solution into the test tube, and we got a purple-ish pink color. 3. Now we will do the lemon juice and repeat the same step as the first tube, which turn into a pink color. 4. Now we will test the baking soda, repeat the same step, and we should see the color change of each tube, which we got a blue color. Determining pH Using pH Paper 1. We will need pH paper, a white piece of paper, glass stir rod, lemon juice, vinegar, baking soda (with distilled water). 2. We will begin by extracting the pH paper and placing it on top of the white paper, we will measure the lemon paper so we will use our glass stir rod to extract some lemon paper and take our pH scale to see what color is most like the color response we got by adding the drop of the lemon juice, we got a total of 3 of the acidic pH level. 3. Now we will use the vinegar, and repeat the same step, and compare the color response to the scale of the pH, we got a 2 of the acidic pH level. 4. Finally, we will do the baking soda solution and place the drop on the pH paper, and we got a total of 8 acidic pH level.
