Virtual Lab Case Studies: Blood and Immunity
Directions
: Review the case studies and respond to the question(s) posed in each study. •
Each case study response should be 3-5 well-developed sentences in length.
•
Use proper spelling, grammar, and mechanics. •
Include correct APA citations and references, if necessary.
Case Study # 1: Heart
Angela’s physician suspects that Angela has just suffered a myocardial infarction, or heart attack. She tells Angela that she is going to take a blood sample so that the hospital lab can perform a test to confirm her diagnosis. What information can Angela’s blood yield to help the physician?
Student Answer: Information that Angela's blood can provide includes levels of enzymes such as troponin and creatine kinase, which, if elevated, indicate myocardial damage, supporting the diagnosis of a myocardial infarction (heart attack).
Case Study #2: Immunity
Many years ago, there was a famous case of a boy born with severe combined immune deficiency (SCID). His physicians placed him in a pathogen-free chamber that resembled a giant glass bubble. What purpose was served by doing this? What treatments are available today that might have helped this boy?
Student Answer: Placing the child in a pathogen-free chamber helped protect her from exposure to harmful pathogens, as her immune system was severely compromised due to SCID. This isolation was crucial to prevent infections that could endanger her life.

By this time, Tylenol has been pulled off the shelves at all of the stores in the area and a nationwide recall has been announced. Several suspicious capsules have been found and tested.
The contents of the capsules contain a compound with a nitrogen content of greater than 15% and a carbon content of less than 50%.
What is the poison in the capsule? Provide calculations to support your answer.

Learning Task 1. Test for Carbohydrates
We can detect the presence of carbohydrates in food samples based on color reactions after adding a certain
chemical. lodine solution or tincture of iodine and Benedict's solution are used to food samples to test the presence of
carbohydrates. Lugol's iodine solution or tincture of iodine changes from yelow to blue or black in the presence of starch. It
the substance that you test contains sugar, Benedict's solution will change color. Positive Test: Benedict's solution changes
from blue to green (very small amount of reducing sugar), to yellow (higher amount af reducing sugar) to orange or brick red
(highest amount of reducing sugar). The change in color is due to the formation of the brick red precipitate, Cu20.
Procedure:
1. This activity will be using given data as assumed results from the activity.
2. The tables below contain tood samples that after a certain chemical was added into it, the color of each sample
changed (color reacton).
