Case Study 2 GENE 402 – Making of a Christian Leader Dr. Mahan 10/25/23
Introduction When it comes to growing a church, I think it is important to take into consideration that people are people, and God is God. A leader can do all the right things to let people grow, but if God has not been brought into the partnership, it will ultimately fail because it will not be for the right reason. Partnering with God on this matter should be one of the first things that take place when wanting to grow. As a church leader who is led by God, a certain type of vision is set within the pastor. God will lead and direct the pastor in a way that fits the community and culture that surrounds the church, while also taking them to new places that will benefit everyone involved. Issue #1 Getting people to volunteer can be either one of the hardest or the easiest things for a pastor to do. When it comes to getting people involved, it is important to hook them in with the right reason, and I could argue that it is equally as important to show them the reason why volunteering is right: urgency and vision. Urgency can easily be one of the reasons that the Church pushes for more volunteers. 1 When there are fewer volunteers, people can begin to get burnt out and their motivation begins to diminish. However, when the church becomes transparent and shows that there is a real need for volunteers, their hearts will begin to move for the church. Additionally, vision can be just as beneficial. 2 If a church is given a short-term vision, the members might be hesitant to join because they don’t know where they are going after the next month or two. When there is a vision laid out, the church members know exactly what they are 1 John P. Kotter, Leading Change (Boston, MA: Harvard Business Review Press, 2012), 4. 2 Ibid, 8
signing up for, and what they are staying for. When people realize that the church has plans for more than just the next month, they will also begin to contribute more to the cause. When there is no vision, it is not likely that they will feel it in their heart to give to the church. Personally, I have experienced this in the previous church where my parents worked. When a new pastor came in, there was no vision set by him and his family, and this led to a huge decline in the congregation’s attendance, giving, and participation throughout of church. A lack of leadership when it comes to vision can be detrimental in every setting. Issue #2 Getting and maintaining active volunteers can easily be one of the hardest things to do at a church or one of the easiest, and I do not believe there is a middle ground. When it comes to leadership in the church, I believe that modeling the way is and can be the best way to show the congregation that volunteering is beneficial to building God’s Kingdom here on earth. When the pastors teach their members how Jesus led primarily through helping those who needed it the most and deserved it the least, people will begin to see the value it has for His Kingdom and for their hearts and minds. Through Kouzes and Posner, we learn that when people learn the “why”, the actual doing becomes much easier, and they learn this by watching the leadership take over and do it themselves. 3 When people are able to “practice what they preach,” their words become much more impactful, and they begin to speak to everyone much louder. Additionally, I believe that not having a multitude of volunteers might not start out as a problem, but it can easily become that way very quickly. Because of life, people’s schedules will conflict at some point resulting in a time where not everyone can volunteer. This is when having a plethora of volunteers can be very helpful. In order to gain a lot of volunteers, it is important to 3 James M.
