Nakaha H, Burke PADM 1650 Dr, Gray 14 November 2023 Northouse - Self-assessment/Reflection Ch 9-10 Reflection When I talk about the idea of diversity, I say that it includes all the wonderful ways that people are different and special. It includes all the different backgrounds, experiences, points of view, and identities that make up society. Age, gender, race, mental and physical skills, ethnicity, and sexual orientation are the six main types of cultural diversity. When I think about them, I find it easier to accept diversity when it comes to ethnicity. I've learned about different countries, practices, and points of view because I grew up in a mixed area and had friends from a wide range of ethnic groups. Because of this, I now value and respect people of different races, which has helped me learn and care about people from other cultures. It has also taught me to be wary of people from different cultures when it comes down to it because different people believe in different things. I really value being included by other people in groups. During a team project where everyone actively joined in decision-making and there was open contact among team members, I felt like I was a part of the group. On the other hand, I felt left out when some team members ignored my ideas and decided to keep me from being a part of certain conversations. Feeling included came from mutual respect and being encouraged to contribute. On the other hand, feeling excluded came from being ignored and not having my points of view considered. When I think about my life, I can say that some parts of my past were fortunate, and some parts very unfortunate. I was able to go to school, have a family that supported me, and take advantage of chances that helped me grow, but I also had my lows and was evicted from my home, lived in very low-income communities and sometimes went without food. I know that I've had some advantages in my life and some disadvantages, but I never let that define me or the person I decided to be. Action It's clear that I can do a better job of being an open leader when I think about the questions on the Cultural Diversity Awareness Questionnaire that I picked "almost never" or "never." For example, if I rarely recognized other people's unique points of view, I could work on actively finding and respecting them when making decisions. I could also try to become more aware of how my actions or words might affect people from different ethnic backgrounds if I rarely thought about how they affected others. Also the words I may choose to use to describe myself or others. As the leader of a service-learning project, I would stress the importance of making the group feel safe by supporting open speech and active listening. I would let everyone know that their thoughts and ideas are respected, and I would show this by really thinking about their ideas and suggestions when decisions are being made. To make sure that people who are different from the
group feel like they are still a part of it, I would stress praising variety and showing how each person's unique point of view improves the group's general experience and results. When looking at stereotypes about other people, it's important to see these assumptions and fight them. It's possible for me to actively fight against the stereotypes I hold about certain groups, like the idea of a transgender guy, a Muslim woman wearing a hijab, or a white male police officer. I would tell myself to value individuality and know that everyone is different, despite any assumptions or stereotypes about who they are. Doing activities that help you understand how others feel and looking for important relationships with people from different backgrounds can help change these ideas and replace stereotypes with a more accurate and detailed knowledge of others.
