EDUC 815 W EEK 3 A RTICLE C RITIQUE Instructions: After reviewing the website article for the assigned module, answer each question below in no more than 3 sentences. Questions: 1. Correctly reference the article using current APA format. Rovai, A. P., Wrighting, M. J., & Liu, J. (2005). School climate: Sense of classroom and school communities in online and on-campus higher education courses. Quarterly Review Distance Education, 6 (4), 361-374. 2. What is the purpose of the study? The purpose of this study was to examine perceptions of the quality of distance learning as it relates to school climate. The authors assessed the connection between the classroom community and the distance learning will be similar as long as instructors use pedagogy that promotes community building. 3. List the hypotheses; then, underline and label the corresponding independent/dependent variables or predictor / criterion variables. Are there any covariates? If so, name them. Are the mean differences in school climate, as measured by classroom community, and student perceptions of learning associated with differences in course delivery method (i.e. on-campus and online) and student status (i.e. undergraduate and graduate )? 4. What research design is used and why? The authors solicited undergraduate and graduate students from two urban universities to participate in the survey. These participants were either currently studying to become educators or already serving in the role as an educator. All of whom had taken both online and face to face classroom courses. 5. What type of sampling method is used? It appears the researchers utilized purposeful sampling methods. 6. What are the names of the instruments (provide a list)? Are the instruments valid and reliable? Why or why not? The Classroom and School Community Inventory (CSCI); which consist of self reporting items, utilizing a 5 point Likert Scale. According to the authors, CSCI is both reliable and valid with coefficient alphas both above .80. With that being said, the results can not be generalized for other students at other universities. 7. Do the author(s) give enough detail regarding the procedure so that the study could be replicated? How or how not? Page 1 of 2
EDUC 815 The authors did provide the targeted population and the required course pathway (all had taken both online and face to face courses). They also stated students volunteered to participate. The concern for the study being able to be replicated is the fact students volunteered and the university’s location. 8. What type of statistical analysis is used and why? This study used a causal-comparative design to study the differences between the population groups. Since only education students were the participants, a multivariate analyses (MANOVA) was used to assist in controlling the validity. 9. What are the major conclusions of the study? How do they relate to the hypothesis? The authors found online students scored lower on classroom and school social community compared to the on-campus students. Furthermore, no difference was reported on the perception of learning form either group. As it pertains to classroom social community and school social community, graduate students scored higher than undergraduate. 10. Do the author(s) suggest any future studies to resolve ambiguities in the present study or to answer questions raised by the present study? The authors did not suggest any additional studies to further their research; however, they did acknowledge the complexity and factors that lend themselves to the differences students reported.
