1 3.4 Assignment: Equity in Education Jasmine Roxanne Martinez School of Education, Fresno Pacific University LA 381: Introduction to Teaching Shirley Esau MA Ed. January 28, 2024
2 A current issue in our education system is that it is not equal. Education is extremely important to advance in a career and succeed as adults. However, it is apparent that not everyone received the same education. Many people have opposing definitions of what equality in the education system looks like. Although, we want the more equality in our education, there are many factors that can affect what equality looks like for everyone. There are many ways to make the education system more equal. Equality can be defined as the same for all, but equality in education may mean something a bit different. According to Thinking Maps (2018), equity in education is an equal opportunity to succeed in school, by accommodation if needed. With this, all students learn in different ways and different paces. Some students have learning disadvantages and have a hard time comprehending information. According to Natalie Nielsen (2013), equity in education is about the difference of learning between higher-class and lower-class education. Both classes have different funding amounts for their education, and students in those classes might go to school for different reasons. According to The Equity and Excellence Commission (2013), we see inequality of education from the gaps between the scores of lower-higher classes. This gap shows how not all students are offered the same quality of education and many factors can lead to this. Equality is important to fairly provide an education to everyone, regardless of wealth, race, age, special needs, and much more. To close the gaps and meet our educational goals, we must provide the same education opportunities to all students (The Equity and Excellence Commission, 2013). The education system can be strengthened and allow room for improvement if all students were to be given a fair chance to learn and meet standards. This will allow for
3 more educated adults in our economy and in turn help the economy system when they pursue careers. Some issues we see is that there is more to equity in education than just education itself. A big cause for low performance has to do with poverty. Poverty indirectly affects education because of the state students are in when they are lacking necessities. Neilson (2013) says, “ But education policies need to be aligned with other government policies, such as housing or welfare, to ensure student success. ” Students need help outside of schools by the government implementing more support for the low income. Thinking Maps (2018) suggests these strategies would help increase equity in education. Money can help make the education system more equal by funding schools that lack resources due to low funding. Holding everyone to the same standard so all students work towards meeting the same goals but modifying so that those who need accommodations are supported. Offering high quality content can support students with their educational goals. Inclusion can make the education system more welcoming and fairer to everyone regardless of what they are or where they come from. Another strategy being to give students room to make errors and learn from them. Natalie Nielsen (2013) suggests these strategies would help increase equity in education. The education system must evolve with time because, “ the interactions among different actors and between people and the other elements of the system are constantly changing over time, and they are determined by the individuals and their goals for the interactions.” Teachers must focus on the strategies that will help the population they teach. Each student has their own challenges and teachers know which. Providing more resources and
