2 Talking with a Close Friend or Relative about your Preferences at the End of Life Discussing my preferences at the end of life with a close friend and a relative is a reflective conversation and deeply personal. We should remember that people may think differently on this issue and try to talk with sympathy and understanding (Hayslip, 2016). Here, one should focus on desires to die leads the way over personally sensitive topics such as emotions and ethics. The problems that could be discussed in discourse may include a longing for a quiet death with people one loves or the determination of some medical actions conforming to one’s perception. Talking with a Young Relative Who Has Questions about Death Communicating about death is crucial for end-of-life care and loved ones’ deaths. Many people would avoid discussing passing with their children because it might be a real problem. Demise is inevitable, so we must teach our children about it and make it OK to talk about it (Ostrov, 2016). If we let kids talk about death, we can give them information, prepare them for emergencies, and support them when they are upset. When discussing death with preschoolers, many people feel tested (Child Development Institute, 2015). They require simple explanations. Concrete, recognized models may help. For instance, death can be made clearer by stating that people die because they no longer breathe, eat, talk, think, or feel; dogs die because they no longer bark or run; and dead flowers no longer grow or sprout. Kids learn by repeating; therefore, they may need to do this often. In conclusion, effective communication in the above scenarios will shape the individuals’ perceptions in these sophisticated discussions and dialogue. For this reason, acknowledging and expressing emotions is likely to occur. Thus, engaging in empathy, connecting with others, and understanding their needs is critical and creates positive impacts.
