Mod 4: Families and Culture
Reflective Thinking
Reflective Activity: Becoming Culturally Sensitive
The Program for Infants and Toddlers notes three requirements for cultural sensitivity:
An ongoing awareness of ourselves and other people
A commitment to learn about cultural perspectives
A willingness to dialogue and negotiate about different perspectives
Think about your cultural sensitivity in relation to the three points above by completing the following exercises. 1. An Ongoing Awareness of Ourselves and Other People
Complete “Everyone Has a Culture” (linked to the dropbox). Then, answer the following:
How did you develop your cultural identity? I developed my cultural identity from my religion, ethnicity and social class. These are the three things that helped to develop my cultural identity into what it is today.
How has your culture influenced the way you relate to children and their families?
Its helped me to understand that sometimes people need help, and if I can I should offer it. Its also influenced me to be much more sensitive to the children that are being raised by someone other than their biological family, and to support the family
.
What other cultures or behaviors of other cultures create sources of irritation for you? I can’t answer because I don’t know much about other cultures other than my own. I’m also not around other cultures other than my own.
2. A Commitment to Learn About Cultural Perspectives
Answer the following:
For each module you will have 2 Reflective Thinking activities to complete. The
first will always be titled “Reflective Activity” (worth 5 points) and the second “My
Reflections” (worth 10 points). Follow the directions below to complete the
Reflective Activity and My Reflections. Save your work and upload to the
Reflective Thinking Dropbox. Be sure to review the Grading Rubric for each
activity (attached to the dropbox). ECED 2040
What do you recall of your first experience in perceiving differences among people? Where were you? What were the circumstances? What emotions can you identify as part of that experience? What happened when you noticed the differences? (Gestwicki) The first experience I had in perceiving the differences among people was around the age of 6 or 7 when I visited my father and his family for the first time. His family was very different than my own, and they all did things, ate things and spoke a certain way that was strange to me. Some of them were also Muslim, and some were Christian. I remember being confused by the things that they wore, even when it was so hot outside and I was also confused about why they did not eat or drink some of the things that the others were eating and drinking until I found out that it was because they were Muslim. When I noticed the differences, I began to watch them closely, being so young I was afraid of them, even though they were my family because the only time I heard anything about Muslims were when they were being talked about for bombing and killing people.
How might you better educate yourself about that culture or cultural behaviors you wrote about above? I could better educate myself about culture or cultural behaviors by doing more research of the culture. I could surround myself with people of that culture and become much
more open to learning more about them.
3. A Willingness to Dialogue and Negotiate About Different Perspectives
Answer the following:
What steps might you try to work through those cultural differences with families? My Reflections: (worth 10 points)
Reflect on the module, looking back at the value for you! First, review the Learning Outcomes and Key Words. Then, write about significant gains or learning that you acquired through the module learning 2resources and activities, and reflect on how this new information is meaningful and valuable to your current or future work with families and children. What have you learned? What do you find most valuable to you and why? What would you like to know more about? Use the handout “Dealing With Diversity” (linked to dropbox) for additional questions to think about.
In this module, I learned how to define cultures and the ways that I can recognize the roles that help to develop the perception of myself. I also learned more about myself during this module, like how I don’t know much about other cultures. I learned that its important to respect other cultures when working with diverse families, because in my opinion it plays a role in a child’s development. I learned not to rely on stereotypes when dealing with religions and cultures that I don’t know much about. I would like to know more about ways that I could deal with diversity and more ways that I can resolve cultural conflicts as well as additional strategies to make families feel welcomed.
