1. Describe at least four principles of effective oral and written communication. The first principle you should follow is trying to steer clear from technical jargon when possible. Instead, you should opt for a language style that is comprehensible to a broader audience and explain technical terms when needed. You can also provide examples to the client to ensure no confusion. The second principle is to ensure you are speaking in person first language, such as “child with autism,” rather than using their disability to define them. The third principle is to be very clear about the topic you are speaking or writing about by introducing it. The next principle is to take that topic and make sure you are organizing it in an understandable and logical way; you may need to include and introduce subtopics. 2. Discuss the advantages of using an in-person interview rather than a written case history questionnaire to gain background information from clients. One benefit is the ability to establish a personal connection and rapport. In face-to-face interactions, the interviewer can build trust, empathize, and create a more comfortable environment for clients to share sensitive information. An in-person interview also allowed for quick clarification of responses; the interviewer is able to ask follow-up questions immediately and seek clarification. Lastly, the interviewer can observe non-verbal cues which can provide valuable insight and understanding beyond what may be conveyed in written responses on a questionnaire. 3. Name three cultural factors that may influence a person's responses to interview questions. Direct questions may be considered rude or inappropriate to African American clients. They also may show disagreements through silence, rather than stating that they disagree. In other cultures, though, they may abstain from expressing their disagreements out of respect for the clinician, such as in the Latino culture. As for clients in the Asian culture, to avoid offending the clinician, they may only express what the clinician wants to hear rather than expressing what is actually going on. 4. Explain the importance of follow-up counseling as a component of diagnostic assessment. Follow-up counseling allows us to begin creating an individualized treatment plan for the client. We can also address any question or concerns that they
might have which can allow us to alleviate any anxiety or misconceptions. Along with that, we are also able to enhance their understanding of their diagnosis and aid in any coping. 5. What criteria are used to determine if a particular topic is appropriate for an audiologist or SLP to address during a clinical counseling session? Firstly, the topic has to be relevant to the patient’s specific needs and concerns. Clinicians must adhere to their scope of practice and should fall within the professional boundaries and expertise. Secondly, SLPs and audiologists can engage in questions or expressing their attitudes towards a communication disorder, but they are not allowed to practice this towards anything other than a communication disorder. 6. Describe the components of an individual intervention plan for speech language therapy. The components that are involved in an individual intervention plan for speech language therapy is your long term and short terms goals for their communication needs, measurable criteria to target their communication behaviors, and the techniques that will be used, such as certain activities and materials that will be used. 7. Compare and contrast the purpose of the following documents: individual intervention plan, SOAP note, progress report, and discharge summary. Individual intervention plans come after a client has been assessed and is ready for treatment. These can be IEPs, IFSPs, etc. Included in these plans are short term and long-term goals that can include speech, language, or audiology sessions. SOAP notes are beneficial to track the treatment of ongoing therapy. It contains subjective information, objective information, an assessment, and plan for the client. These notes can either be quickly done or have more information involved in them. Throughout a client’s intervention, certain goals and achievements should be assessed as time goes by. By doing this, we are able to determine how well our program is going, if it needs to be changed in any way, and what we need to determine for further intervention. With discharge summaries, any postintervention supports will be recommended to the client if needed, but these summaries will include everything from the beginning of their treatment to the very end. It will
include their progress, achievements, successful fittings of earring aids or the use of hearing aids, and any changes regarding communication intervention.
