Report
CEE 340: Energy and Global Environment Fall 2022 Due: August 31, 2022, at 2:00 PM U.S. Central time Homework #1 (Energy and Transportation): 100 points 1. Opt-in information. Complete the opt-in information in the HW1 folder on Canvas. (15 points) 2. Energy conversions. Find current costs in $/kWh for energy that comes in the following forms. State your data sources and assumptions using reputable references and show relevant calculations. (Note: 1 kWh = 1 kilowatt ´ 1 hour). (Hint: some of the sites listed in the CEE340_Data_Sources.pdf may be a good starting place) a) Electricity b) Middle distillate fuel (diesel) c) Coal (35 points) 3. Transportation energy. The average home in Illinois uses 755 kWh of electricity per month. Imagine you have one of these average homes, and you want to provide your home’s monthly energy with (i) diesel fuel, and (ii) coal. How much energy does it take to ship each of these energy carriers to your home from a resource field in Belfield, North Dakota (a) by train, and (b) by heavy truck? For the heavy truck, you can assume that each truck is able to carry 15 tons of cargo. Create a documented spreadsheet to complete your calculations. Consult the guide in the HW1 folder on Canvas. Note the following about a documented spreadsheet: i) It retains data sources ii) It differentiates between raw input data and final answers iii) It clearly shows constant values (such as conversions) without embedding them iv) It is easy to add further analysis by copying an entire row I’ve provided a guide to help you get started, you may start with the example spreadsheet format in the guidance document or create your own. (50 points) Submit all of your HW1 responses via Canvas.
