In the scenario, the client is expressing difficulty making it to appointments and provider recommended support groups due to unreliable transportation. They express frustration with the state funded Non-Emergency Medical Transportation services (NEMT), citing instances where the bus is late, or does not show up at all. The client has few financial resources, making it difficult to pay for their own transportation and unfortunately can only rely on friends and family
for transportation some of the time. For this client, who lives with significant mental health needs and physical disabilities, unreliable
transportation is proving to be a notable barrier to care. It is directly impacting their ability to adhere to their recommended treatment plan. Despite the therapists advise for the client to attend group therapy three times per week, and the client’s willingness to attend at that rate, the client has only been able to attend three groups in the past two months due to unreliable transportation. Attending group therapy at the recommended three days per week would likely improve the client’s overall quality of life as they would contribute to both physical and mental health stability, which would result in fewer hospitalizations.
