1. Explain the importance of treating each patient as a guest in
the imaging department.
It is important to treat the patient as a guest in the imaging department because they are receiving many of the services provided in the medical facility. They are immediately introduced to an environment where they are not familiar with many machines and people waiting for them. You want to establish and maintain an atmosphere of caring and empathy for the patient and treat them as a guest in a home. The treatment should be respectful without being familiar, and empathetic without being emotional. As well as being considerate without being fearful and professional without being cold. 2. Discuss critical thinking and how it can be applied in the classroom and clinical settings.
Critical thinking is vital as all health care providers must be able to make logical decisions and wise choices regarding our career. Critical thinkers are prized for their ability to look at a situation from different perspectives and can find the best possible way to react to a situation which makes them ideal in the health care area. The characteristics of a critical thinker consists of human, analytical, rational, open-minded, systematic and inquisitive. To become a critical thinker there are steps you must go through, the first step is humility where you are taking a humble approach and are open to learning. The second step is respect for others where learning to respect others and their opinions allows us to live peacefully in a diverse society of other cultures and traditions. The third step is self-awareness where you can recognize things that change your emotions which allows you to deal with them more effectively, this helps with the awareness of our standards and ethical values and can help us make objective decisions and to act responsibly. The last step is honing your skills, where it takes practice to become proficient in activities and where practice will help you develop your skills. This allows us to knowingly and deliberately examine things from several perspectives and weigh the evidence on the most reliable basis.
This information can be applied in the classroom because understanding yourself and as well as your needs, aspirations and
perception of the world will allow you to order your activities in a practical and logical manner. And by mastering ways to better your skills in reading, listening and storing and receiving information in memory will guarantee success in being a better student. This will also carry on into your career and the clinical setting, because as a health care provider many issues requiring logical judgement and rational action will be needed, which is where this information comes in. 3. Discuss factors that hinder critical thinking and how they can
be managed.
The factors that hinder critical thinking consist of background beliefs, faulty reasoning, group loyalty, frozen mind-set, and emotional baggage. Background beliefs can hinder critical thinking because these beliefs are the most deeply ingrained and the most intensely defended, especially when they are challenged
with a conflicting value. A way that background beliefs can be managed is by examining one’s views and beliefs while keeping in
mind the reality of the situation. Faulty reasoning can hinder critical thinking because it is false information that is stated as a fact, even such information as statistics. But statistics are not always interpreted correctly, the statistics must be examined from several different aspects. However not all data is collected or
reported and cannot be used to predict the future because it assumes that the past will repeat itself. A way faulty reasoning can be managed is by not dismissing them altogether but critically examining them and understanding their limitations. Group loyalty can hinder critical thinking because of the desire to gain status within the group. Due to the predetermined set of acceptable behaviors in the group success in everyday life depends on being accepted to the social group which is the instinct that keeps us loyal. This leads to us behaving in ways that
will enhance our status and make us feel comfortable, and this instinct will make us aware that survival depends on the survival
