Gun control can help when it comes to law abiding citizens, but there will always be gangs and the black market. You can have all the gun control laws in the country, but if you don't
enforce them, people are going to find a way to protect themselves. Many people are unaware of the actual laws already established. Examples of this can be found all over YouTube, but an example is Brandon Herrera “crashing” a rally outside of the NRA convention. He goes around asking people if we should make it a federal law that you must be 18 years old to purchase a gun,
they all said yes, which tells you they have not researched any of their arguments. Here is the exact link to the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n4D0_dhwHPA . So, to understand gun control we first must understand what is classified as a firearm, understand the statistics of states with strict laws, and how to practice home safety.
NFA
Not all “guns” are NFA, National Firearms Act, weapons. Black powder weapons are non-NFA and do not have to be registered with the ATF. Thus, we can own cannons, which might
be a little much but who would rob a house that has a cannon? “The NFA was originally enacted in 1934. Similar to the current NFA, the original Act imposed a tax on the making and transfer of
firearms defined by the Act, as well as a special (occupational) tax on persons and entities engaged in the business of importing, manufacturing, and dealing in NFA firearms. The $200 making and transfer taxes on most NFA firearms were considered quite severe and adequate to carry out Congress’ purpose to discourage or eliminate transactions in these firearms. The $200 tax has not changed since 1934”, (ATF, 2023) There have actually been examples of where someone was convicted of breaking a law with a gun and had it unregistered. However, “a person prosecuted for possessing an unregistered NFA firearm had a valid defense to the prosecution — the registration requirement imposed on the possessor of an unregistered firearm violated the possessor’s privilege from self-incrimination under the Fifth Amendment of the U.S.
Constitution”, (ATF, 2023) Yes this may sound like a bad decision, but it shows that some people
that break the law actually have more sense of how to work the laws so that they have a good defense for whatever they did. Statistics
According to CNN for every 100 people there are 120.5 guns, the next most populated gun center is the Falkland Islands with 62.1 guns per 100 peoples (Fox, et al, 2023). According to the FBI’s website in 2019 California, who has the strictest gun laws, only place stricter in North America is Canada, had the most murders with 1,679. The total firearms used were 1,142, 762 handguns, 34 rifles, 26 shotguns. However, besides handguns Knives killed 252 people, body parts (hand, feet, fist, etc) had 102. So, what this should tell us is that even if guns are outlawed that it will not stop much of anything. It might bring the numbers down, but not much. For comparison Texas, has more guns per capita, in 2021 1.6 million were purchased which is one gun for every 14 adults (Covington, 2022). Texas has the lightest gun laws by the state, yet they still had less murders than California, nearly 300 less. Only 2 stats Texas was higher in are that more rifles were used and unknown firearm type (FBI, 2019).
Home Safety Protocols & This will rub many people the wrong way, but more gun control will not stop school or mass shootings. A golden rule that my father-in-law has is that only he and my mother-in-law know the code and exact location of his guns. The children that take a gun to school to shoot people are the ones that the parents are more laissez-faire about letting the kids know the code to the gun safe, or do not even have the guns in a safe. There are good reasons as to why the kid may need to know the code incase they are alone and someone breaks in, however how do not let
the kid take any weapon out without a parent with them or consent weapons out. An easy way to do this is changing the code constantly, if you tell the child the code then the next time the code should be different. And if someone does break in while the child is home alone, every kid has a
