Comments
(a) What did you notice about the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of teachers within your content area?
One thing that really stood out to me as effectiveness of teachers withing my content area is the way teachers interact with the students. As I am sure each teacher has its own teaching philosophy, I have noticed that all of the teachers have the qualities of good teachers: committed, caring, courageous, conscious, and center (Koch, 2020, p. 8). The teachers are aware of their presence in the classroom as they use a slightly raised voice to keep the students’ attention on them (teachers); the students listen carefully to the lesson or assignment given without interrupting; few teachers have to redirect the students’ attention, when necessary; the teachers also walk around the class as the students work on their assignments in groups and actively engage with the students by giving feedback, answering questions and posing questions to further help the students with their critical thinking skills. (b) What did you notice about the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of teachers outside your content area?
One thing that stood out to me as effectiveness of teaching outside of my content area is that learning is an interactive, social experience that requires communication between the learners and their peers as well as their teachers. (Koch, 2020, p.17). Teachers hold discussions and conversations on topics that may not be easy to navigate, per example one topic is STD (video #2378), and slavery (video #896); both teachers were open, honest, and kept the students engaged while navigating the topics. The students also seemed not afraid to ask or answer questions as they engaged with their peers and the teachers; they listened to what their classmate were discussing and respectfully responded with their thoughts. Open conversations are very important to learn and understand a possible different view.
(c) What are your overall conclusions about teaching based on these videos?
After watching and reviewing all 20 videos, I have learned a lot of different things. Teachers are more likely to have an impact on students by
building a good, respectful relationship with them and among the students
and building a community within the classroom where all students with different backgrounds, cultures and ethnicity feel welcome, included and part of a “family”; teachers and students can learn from each other personally and professionally. When students don’t feel included, they tend to not contribute within the classroom as much as those who feel included; they also may not give their best when it comes to team assignments and homework; they would feel as if they have to go to school just to be there.
