Letticia Solomon WRTG 394 August 24, 2019 COMMUNICATION ANALYSIS Part I: Background Information I am a member of the military Veteran community who pursued higher education utilizing the GI bill benefits after separation. Before separation, we receive a 5 day seminar to prepare us for an easy transition to the civilian sector. The seminar places emphasis on “how to get a job” training and Veterans disability. Not every Veteran separating is looking to get a job or are even entitled to receive disability compensation. After separation, there is not much that can be done for us within the active military community so we rely on resources and past experiences to maneuver through the new changes. We have virtual platforms that allow us to manage, track, and utilize our benefits to include house purchases, higher learning, health benefits, and disability. It has become clear that although we have the virtual platform we don’t receive the proper prior training on how to utilize the system after separation to activate the listed benefits. I have noticed trial and error is how most Veterans get to the end goal of activating benefits and there is no clear communication on how to successfully activate entitlements upon separation. There is only a week long lecture on what we have available. Part II: Communication Inhibitors Channel Barrier - occurs when the communication may not be relevant to ones expectations or the message is to long and drawn out which can lead to lack of interest and conflicts will arise between the communicator and receiver. Distance - Communication is not direct and through different virtual outlets such as phone, email, or fax due to individuals operating at different places; tone and translation may be lost in a message. Not confirming with the recipient - The communicator should always check with the listeners to ensure they are still following along and are clear with the information that was passed; checking in occasionally and making eye contact decreases loss of understanding and increases retention in translated message. Part III: Incidents
Communication Inhibitor Analysis During Transition Readiness Seminar I already had my future objective set to pursue higher learning and start a business. The instructor spent 3 days teaching us how to get a job, where to find resources, and assisting members with disabilities. Channel Barrier I attended the seminar expecting to receive information on how to further my specific goal set. Instead a lot of time was spent on matters that did not apply to me and when my time came to pursue my interest I had to go through trial and error and a lot of return submissions to initiate my use of the GI Bill for my university of choice. After I applied online to use my GI benefits at my school of choice, I received a letter in the mail requiring me to forfeit one benefit for another, sign in ink, and return. I did not have any source to sign and return the letter as I was on vacation but also needed it to be processed as soon as possible to meet the term start dates. After reading the correspondence in full, I seen that I could elect for the benefit in the question section by making a statement of my choice. Distance Once separated from service, I no longer belonged to a specific unit or organization so my communication is done through many benefit portals which utilize mail as correspondence. I didn’t know about electing in or out of certain benefits when I had the class I thought I automatically had all my entitlements because I earned them. Communicating with the education section through email and portals made communicating harder because I didn’t have a real specialist to talk to face to face to get an understanding on what I was doing and most importantly why I had to do it. The 5 day seminar on transitioning needed and we had to provided instructor feedback on the material that was presented with a 1-5 rating scale and any comments. Not confirming with the recipient The real feedback should be provided during a certain time period after separation. There are many things I wish we covered in the seminar that would be helpful when actually transitioning.
