1. What should you know about building construction?
It is essential that you have a working knowledge of how buildings are designed, constructed, renovated, maintained, altered, and fall into disrepair.
2. Why should you know building design?
Your life depends upon it. As a firefighter you must understand how construction materials behave under the attack of fire.
3. How many fire fighters die each year in the line of duty?
On average 100 fire fighters die in the line of duty every year.
4. How many fire fighters are hurt each year in the line of duty?
In 2012 more than 30,500 fire fighters sustained injuries such as sprains, burns, and smoke inhalation.
5. Why is communication important within firefighting teams?
Effective communication is essential to succeed and sometimes survive while operating on the fire ground. Clear communication also allows different agencies to effectively operate with each other. 6. What went wrong with the Avianca airliner crash in 1989?
“Language” was a major contributing factor. The pilot kept telling the controller that he was low on fuel when he should have declared an “emergency.”
7. What does “pull your line out” mean?
To some “pull your line out” means to reposition the line. The fire ground commander in one building collapse used it to mean, “Get out of there fast.”
8. What should you do when you hear “Mayday” on the radio?
You should clear the “air” of all radio traffic not directly associated with the “Mayday.”
9. What should you leave behind when evacuating?
All tools, equipment and hose lines should be left behind when evacuating.
10. What does the term “immediate evacuation” mean?
“Immediate evacuation,” mean drop all tool, equipment, and hose lines and immediately exit the structure.
