Intercultural Communication & Engagement GLST 220 Cultural Experience Reflection Template Due: See Canvas for due date (50 points) NAME: Course-Section: Students are expected to take part in a cross-cultural experience on campus or in the Lynchburg community during the semester (see the Cultural Experience Instructions document for details). You must have a personal conversation with someone whose first language is not the same as yours. Following the experience, answer the following questions below. Include a word count for each question. 1. Describe the experience. What did you do? Who did you talk to? What is their ethno- linguistic background? Remember that this should be different from your own. (100 words/10 points) a. When I first started thinking about this assignment, I knew exactly who I wanted to talk to. I met my friend Victoria at Thomas Road as she leads my small group on Sunday mornings and is also on the prayer team with as well. She was the first person to pop in my head for this assignment because she grew up surrounded by a completely different culture than my own. Victoria grew up surrounded by Argentinian culture and eventually moved there with the rest of her family. She grew up learning Spanish and English at the same time, but only speaks Spanish in the household. We were able to get breakfast together in order for me to dive deeper into the culture that she loves and how that shaped her. This opportunity was such a blessing as I got the opportunity to grow in my relationship with her. 2. Discuss what you learned about the culture represented through the experience. (150 words/15 points) a. There were so many thing that I learned through this experience of talking with Victoria. The main things were the differences in culture and cultural norms in Argentina versus in the States/Liberty University. One main thing that Victoria talked about is the high value of community in the Argentina culture. She had mentioned that people there hang out every single day. It’s not so much a weekend thing but everyday throughout the week it was very normal to grab coffee all together after work; she had mentioned that there are coffee shops on every corner. It was also very normal to just go to other people’s houses without asking first because that was the level of comfort and how deep friendships there are. Another main culture difference that Victoria talked about was how everyone there greets each other with a kiss on the cheek. She had given the example that when going to a birthday party, it was normal to greet everyone at that party with that introduction of a kiss on the cheek. GLST 220
Intercultural Communication & Engagement GLST 220 3. Analyze how your awareness of cultures in general and specific cultures represented on campus or in the local community has changed as a result of your involvement in this activity? (150 words/15 points) a. My awareness of culture has changed in many ways just because of how my eyes have been open to the diversity of cultures all around me just on campus. You could tell on Victoria’s face and the way that she described her culture how happy it made her to talk about her experiences in Argentina. She truly loves that culture and even wants to live there after her schooling. It was so evident how this culture shaped her, and her experiences of living in Argentina has affected how she does things now. It just put into perspective of how I can sometimes have blinders on and focus solely on my culture and American culture as well. This assignment really just broadened my perspective on how many other people around me have those same stories, but we can get so wrapped up in our own culture that we miss those opportunities to learn from others. 4. How has your perspective grown and/or what did God show you through this experience? (100 words/10 points) a. God really used this as an encouragement to me of how beautiful His creation and cross-cultural experiences really are. It gave me a new perspective to how much culture is around me that I do not see and do not take advantage of. There are so many things that can be learned from just simply having a conversation with someone who did grow up in a different culture than you and having those cross- cultural experiences. God showed me that I really do not have to look far to be able to understand the beauty of the different cultures in this world.
