Interview your cooperating teacher/mentor about the following aspects of your cooperating classroom. Use the discussion to prepare for the student teaching experience. Your interview questions and observations should review the following: The best methods for communicating with your cooperating teacher/mentor The school philosophy, policies, calendar, and daily schedule The professional dispositions including expectations regarding dress, behavior, etc. Required reports and recordkeeping, grading standards, and discipline procedures District/school resources provided based upon the learning expectations Expectations for students, routines, procedures, and an established classroom management plan Additional questions as appropriate Summarize and reflect upon your interview and explain how you will use your findings in your student teaching practice and future professional practice. Consider the following: How can you apply your findings to your future professional career? During this season, I will be working alongside Frannie Laughner, who is the lead teacher in a 10th grade Global History integrated classroom. The school is known as a College and Career prep charter school whose mission is to prepare their students for their lives after graduating high school, whether they decide to attend college or a trade school. This school handles any misconduct by holding restoration periods after school where students get to reflect on any of their actions and be guided on how they can make better choices, with the hope of no one being a repeat offender. Ms. Laughner teaches five sections of global history and has three prep periods, which is when she and I will have our planning sessions. We have decided that I will be working closely with Ms. Laughner. We have set up a faux contract on what my responsibilities are going to be. A set schedule on when we are planning as well as our communication times, where we have agreed that we will leave the period between 6 am-7 pm as a window open for
communication and during the weekend, we will maintain contact via email if need be before Monday morning. The students in the school are required to follow a dress code of white or blue school polo shirts and either khaki or navy blue plans. The one exception is on Fridays; students can wear any of their school tee shirts, polos are not required. Staff members must dress in business casual attire, and on Fridays, they can wear jeans and non-logo tee shirts. The school works with a system called Kickboard, where any infraction should be noted, and the deans will be reviewing any write-ups during the day and keeping a record of anything that comes up. Also, the deans will decide that if the infraction is severe enough, the student(s) will serve an immediate consequence. In terms of in-class, I will be assigned a mini caseload to follow along with, and I will be able to work with those students during this season while being overseen by Ms. Laughner. I will always be working with the students' counselors/social workers to best meet the needs of those students. The entire school runs on a "family" mentality, and everyone can work together to best impact their students for the better. I am highly looking forward to working at this school during this season. I am looking forward to learning and putting my skills to use, and expanding in order to be a better educator. This upcoming week we will be wrapping up our finish mini-unit and holding a Socratic Seminar to discuss their stance about the Death Penalty. There is an entire system in place on how they conduct themselves and keep tabs on each other's arguments, exciting times. From there on, we shall continue to work together to fully support all the students in the classroom as a team. Ms. Laughner has planned to fully include me in the lessons and not simply have me as just an extra body in the room. I am seen as a "regular" teacher that is merely new to working with this cohort, looking forward to more extraordinary things to come.
