DQ’s Week ONE Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge 1. Which weekly objectives do you have prior knowledge of and to what extent? 2. Which weekly objectives do you have no prior knowledge of? 3. What course-related topics would you like to discuss with your instructor and classmates?  What questions or concerns do you have about this course?  Objectives: 4. Identify elements of the online classroom environment. 5. Review available GCU academic resources. 6. Apply graduate-level academic writing skills. 7. Analyze graduate-level academic research requirements. 8. Evaluate strategies for content engagement and time management. 9. Explore the importance of faith integration and academic integrity. Out of our six weekly objectives, I have prior knowledge of two. Through the Halo course I took earlier this week, I learned a lot about the different elements of the online classroom. Halo helped me in exploring the GCU resources offered to current students. On the other hand, when it came to objective number three, my knowledge was lacking. In the past I have only every used the writing format MLA. APA 7th Edition is a new format to me. The resources were helpful in explaining the style and its use. The last objective, faith integration, is also a new term to me. I’m excited to dig into these topics and learn more. Class introduction: Hello, my name is Sonja. I am 24 years old, from Atlanta, Georgia. I did my undergraduate at the University of West Georgia. I majored in Mass Communications with a concentration in Film and Media Studies with a minor in psychology. Through the Georgia Film Academy, I earned a certificate that allowed me to immediately be ready to work on set and was able to secure a job very quickly in my chosen field. I graduated in the winter of 2021 and have been working in the film industry ever since. I have worked on films such as Guardians of the Galaxy 3, Guardians' Holiday Special, Blade, and Electric State. My department of choice was Costumes, and within the year I plan on joining the union and becoming an official costumer. At the current moment I am working on DC's new up and coming film. I decided to start my graduate degree so I can eventually teach film. Georgia has a special program where industry professional who have an interest in teaching can in their chosen department. I plan on staying in the industry for a few more years before full transitioning to teaching. As much as I love working in film the lifestyle is not as suited to me. I work no less than 60 hours a week and it can take a toll. Teaching has always been where I wanted to end up and film is my passion. Combining both just seems like the dream. Discussion Post 1-A Navigate to the Learning Management System Video Series resource in the Topic 1 Resources to complete this DQ. Choose one video tutorial to summarize and post your summary as a response
DQ’s here in the discussion forum. In your summary share one thing that you found helpful from the video. How might you utilize that information? What is a scenario in which you may need to refer to the video for guidance or support? The goal of this discussion question is to provide summaries for all the help tutorials, so try to summarize one of the tutorials that has not already been summarized by another student. If all videos have already been summarized, your summary should include new or additional information/examples not already shared by another student. For my Discussion post I chose to watch the video on Discussion Forums. This video explained the how the discussion board works and how to correctly post. The video went on to explain certain elements and highlights that can be helpful to a student’s success. For example, if you are not ready to post, but have already written information into the box you can leave your post inside the box and your work will be automatically saved. Once you’ve posted you have the chance to edit or delete, unless it’s been over 24 hours, the post has been graded or it’s restricted. The post menu is another feature that makes negativing through names easier. If you are looking for a specific post just head over to the menu bar and click the post, you want to view. I found the information and demonstration about the menu bar very insightful. Instead of spending time scrolling through the varies post and replies, I can simply click on the name of the person I want to view. Discussion Post 2-A After learning more about what GCU is all about by reading the GCU doctrinal statement and Christian Identity and Heritage, how do you think GCU’s Christian heritage makes the GCU academic experience different than at a non-faith-based university? What value will this difference add to your educational experience? Your response must be 150-200 words. During my bachelor’s degree I did not attend a Christian based university, so this will be a totally new experience for me. I am Christian (Baptist specifically) and I have found that being surrounded by others helps me grow. I believe working with like-mind individuals who share the same believe with help me throughout this journey. If I am struggling in any aspect, I won’t be afraid talk to someone. I believe the Christian based education would help ground me. It will help bring mental peace. I will also find it easier to continue to practice and focus on my faith especially with it being in every aspect of my life. When attending my bachelor program, I never found a Christian based club or program and being away from home I struggled with my faith. I went from being able to attend my church every service to hardly going home. Having a faith- based education or just a program in general would have helped during those years.
DQ’s Discussion Post 3-A Review “Title IX” in the topic resources and respond to the following: What is Title IX and how does it impact you as a student? Title IX prevents sex and gender discrimination in programs and actives that receive federal funding. The polices at Grand Canyon University applies to all students online and in-school. GCU insures they will take all steps to prevent any harassment that occurs. GCU’s Title IX Module list six of these behaviors covered by this policy. The first one is Quid Pro Quo, which covers any unwelcome sexual conduct that comes from an employee of the University. The second is sexual harassment, any unwelcome conduct from another person. The third includes any act of sexual assault. Dating violence and Domestic violence are the fourth and fifth. These cover any violence, on the basis of sex, committed by a romantic person or spouse (rather former or current). The sixth is listed as stalking. The form also goes over and explains that it is prohibited to have any sexual conduct between student and employee of GCU. At the end of the Act, it explains how to file a complaint. For sexual harassment complaints multiple options are available. A victim can file criminal complaints, institutional complaints, anonymous complaints and confidential assistance. This Act helps protect students and is very resourceful in case any accident. References  Grand Canyon. (2023).  Title IX Curriculum Module . Copy an excerpt from the article. The excerpt should be the length of a paragraph (approximately four to five sentences long). Post the excerpt as your initial discussion forum post with your paraphrase of this excerpt directly underneath using appropriate APA citations. Use the link below to assist you. The DQ response must be 150-200 words and have at least one citation and one reference in APA format.
DQ’s https://libguides.gcu.edu/APA Original Excerpt: Our movie theaters and TV screens are crowded with depictions of violence. These depictions move us, which means they produce changes in our mental and physical attitudes and dispositions. Some of these fade away the moment we turn from the screen, but many of them linger, beneath the threshold of awareness. The violence we see in movies shapes our attitude toward violence in the real world. For example, a movie like The Dark Knight Rises (2012) is likely to subtly influence when we regard actual violence as natural or necessary. If a lot of people watch many movies that promote similar attitudes toward violence, that is bound to have a significant impact on the whole culture. My Paraphrase: The human mind is easily swayed and can be easily influenced. Our films and shows are littered with violence and rage. Watching these can produce changes in our mental states unconsciously. Most of these emotions dissipate the moment we turn off our screens, but many stay with us in our unconsciousness. The images we take in from the screens impact our reactions and feelings towards violence in the world around us. The Dark Knight suggests that violent reactions and actions are natural and necessary to achieve. This kind of suggested violence throughout films can have a cultural impact that is not beneficial to us as a society. References: Eitzen, Dirk. (2024).
