Define communication
Communication is the process where information is shared between and among
individuals.
•
Identify the principles of good communication
Good communication is not the same as giving information, the sender is responsible for
clarification, use simple exact language, make sure the receiver understands the message,
face to face whenever possible
•
Discuss formal & informal methods of communication
Formal communication (OFFICIAL) occurs from the top down along the chain of
command or from the bottom up. Communication consists of newsletters, intranet
communication, formal education, employee surveys, computer complaints, budget
requests, strategic planning info, and chain of command.
Informal Communication (UNOFFICIAL) lacks defined lines of communication, may
not reach all parties, breaks, and a grapevine may occur (the communication is altered as
it moves along).

Identify & discuss communication tools (SBAR, change-of shift report, huddle, hand-off)
Change of Shift report- patient info is shared between nurses who have taken care of the
patient
SBAR- Template using situation, background, assessment, and recommendation
Handoff- transferring information (along with authority and responsibility) during
transitions of care across the continuum
Huddle- meeting scheduled to reestablish situational awareness and update all members
of the health care team

Review communication principles of conflict resolution
Communication principals of conflict resolution- identify the source of the conflict, use
problem solving, and negotiation to resolve the conflict.

Define conflict; list 3 conflict resolution strategies
Conflict arises when there are two or more opposing views, feelings, or expectation
Three conflict resolution strategies are- Communicate, actively listen, review options,
and end with a win-win solution

Differentiate between groups & teams
Groups are composed of members that have a common purpose and work independently,
they have meetings that coordinate their activity, attendance is not mandatory, because
subs carry the messages, individuals are recognized for effectiveness.
Teams are composed of members who have a common purpose and work
interdependently, the team works well together because they are focused on a common
purpose, meetings are used for strategic planning, attendance is important because there
are no subs, there is a mutual trust.

Discuss qualities of a team player
Qualities of a team player include Adaptability, Collaboration is more than cooperation.
It means each person brings something to the project that adds value to the team and
supports the creation of synergy, Commitment, Communication, Competence, Team
members who are dependable follow through and do what they have, agreed to do, and
do it well, without prodding or delay. Discipline, Adds value, Enthusiastic, Intentional,
Awareness of the mission, Prepared, Relationship-oriented, Improves self, Selflessness,
Solution-focused, Tenacious, Strong patient and nurse outcomes depend on the work of
the entire team, so it is important for all staff members to understand their significance
and value within the larger organizational and team structure.

Discuss the use of the team assessment questionnaire
The team assessment questionnaire is used to assess and evaluate a team who is not
working as well as it should be. This questionnaire evaluates; absence of trust, fear of
conflict, lack of commitment, avoidance of accountability, and inattention to results.
•
Discuss the Interdisciplinary or Multidisciplinary patient care team
The interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary team is a variety of team members all working
together with nurses. These team members can include but are not limited to; physicians,
case management, social workers, respiratory, physical, occupational, and speech
therapists, pharmacists, psychologists, educators, and dieticians.

Discuss power & control within a team
Power and control happen when there is a team effort, power and control usually come
into play, When a person reacts to a situation at the feeling level, there are often blame
and judgment calls. People normally like to believe that their input and contributions are
respected and used by the group. For a team to be effective, each member of the group
must be able to communicate effectively, offer constructive criticism, and acknowledge
the positive at every chance, Acknowledgments must be specific, sincere, timely, and
delivered eye to eye. They are more effective when given publicly.

Discuss the importance of unit culture
Unit Culture is important because it is used to recognize and reward success, everyone
makes a difference, never let great work go unnoticed, reward team members for a job
well done, create win-win situations, recognize contributions.
