Comm 3580 Crisis & Communication
22 March 2024
The NFL gambling scandal has come about as an extremely serious matter, really threatening the league's reputation, and raising concerns among stakeholders. The reports of illegal gambling activities that involve players and league officials have surfaced, which has led to a widespread media coverage and public criticism and rightfully so. In order to address this crisis effectively, we as the NFL must come up with a strategic communication plan that really focuses on spreading accurate information and ultimately, changing beliefs about our organization's reaction to the scandal.
The NFL gambling scandal really poses a large threat to the integrity of the league and it’s credibility. If this situation isn’t managed properly, it could result in long-term damage to the NFL's relationship with fans, sponsors, and stakeholders. So, it’s clear it is essential for the 2organization to act accordingly and strategically to address the crisis and manage its overall impact.
Objective #1: Sharing Information Goal
Strategy 1: We need to establish clear communication channels to really provide effective communication, our organization will create these clear channels for understanding all of the information about the NFL gambling scandal. This involves using some traditional media outlets such as (TV, radio, newspapers) as well as actively engaging on digital platforms (our official website, social media). I believe this is effective because it aligns with the CDC's recommendation to use a variety of channels for crisis communication (CDC, 2018) and

Houston's (2012) suggestion to make sure that information is distributed evenly through the various mediums.
Strategy 2: We need to be sure that our organization will provide regular updates to the public and media about the status of investigations into the NFL gambling scandal and any actions that we take in order to fix the issue at hand. This aligns with the CDC's recommendation to repeat messages during a crisis I believe, ultimately making sure that the public is informed and aware of the situation at hand (CDC, 2018). Benoit (1997) also underlines the importance of providing updates in a timely manner in order to maintain credibility during a crisis.
Objective #2: Changing Beliefs Goal
Strategy 1: Engage with Stakeholders The organization will engage with stakeholders, including fans, sponsors, and the NFL community, to address any misconceptions or misperceptions about the scandal. This will involve open and transparent communication to demonstrate the organization's commitment to addressing the issue. Coombs (2007) emphasizes the need for organizations to engage with stakeholders during a crisis to manage perceptions and maintain trust.
Strategy 2: Provide Evidence of Accountability: We as an organization will be sure to provide accountable evidence by taking many clear and concrete actions to address the NFL gambling scandal. In doing this, it may include taking disciplinary actions against all individuals that are involved in the situation, changes to our policies and procedures, as well as full cooperation with legal authorities. I believe that by our organization demonstrating this level of accountability, we as an organization really aim to change the beliefs about our handling of this scandal. Benoit
