M07 Personal Assessment Reflection
Chapter 10 Reflection:
After assessing my communication in relational maintenance, I found that several behaviors are particularly important to me in a relationship. These include acts of positivity towards me, understanding, and forgiveness. When my partner acts positively towards me, it uplifts the relationship atmosphere, making it more enjoyable and supportive. Additionally, understanding and forgiveness foster a sense of trust and emotional safety, which are crucial for maintaining a healthy and long-lasting relationship.
Communication has played a significant role in both helping and hindering my relationships. On the positive side, open communication about feelings and future plans has strengthened bonds and fostered a deeper connection with my partner. However, inadequate communication about the quality of the relationship or the inclusion of friends in activities has sometimes led to misunderstandings or feelings of neglect. Thus, effective communication has been essential for resolving conflicts and enhancing intimacy, while poor communication has posed challenges and
created barriers in relationships.
Chapter 11 Reflection:
Upon examining my family's communication pattern, I found that we align more closely with a high conversation orientation and a moderate conformity orientation. Our family places a strong emphasis on open communication, as evidenced by discussions about feelings, future plans, and the ability to share almost anything with my parents. However, there is also a moderate expectation of conformity, where my parents usually have the final say, and there are certain topics or rules where deviation is discouraged.
Communication significantly impacts our family dynamics by shaping our relationships, decision-making processes, and overall atmosphere at home. Open communication fosters trust, understanding, and cohesion among family members, allowing us to navigate challenges and celebrate successes together. On the other hand, limited communication or conflicts in communication can lead to misunderstandings, tension, and decreased family satisfaction.
To impact my family's communication pattern positively moving forward, I could encourage even more open dialogue about controversial topics, ensure everyone's voices are heard and valued, and work towards finding common ground on issues where conformity may create friction. Additionally, fostering an environment where differing opinions are respected and conflicts are resolved constructively can further enhance our family communication dynamics.
