Unit 2: the Observation deck Derek Marrero Heredia COM107 Introduction to communication
The video I chose was Wonder (2017) in the video and in the overall of the movie. The characters use effective listening to express empathy in many ways, particularly in their interactions with August "Auggie" Pullman, a young boy with facial differences. Here are some examples I observe from the film: Active Listening : Characters in the movie engage in active listening when Auggie speaks. They give him their full attention, maintain eye contact, and respond to what he is saying. This active engagement conveys a sense of presence and attentiveness. Empathetic Responses : Characters respond to Auggie's experiences with empathy. They express understanding of his challenges and emotions, acknowledging his feelings and letting him know that they care. For example, when Auggie talks about his struggles, his family and friends respond with words of comfort and support. Nonverbal Cues : Nonverbal communication, such as facial expressions and body language, is crucial in conveying empathy. Characters in "Wonder" use these cues to show compassion, concern, and understanding. Their expressions reflect the emotional impact of Auggie's experiences. Avoiding Judgment : The characters refrain from judging Auggie based on his appearance. Instead, they focus on understanding him as an individual, appreciating his personality, and valuing his unique qualities. This lack of judgment fosters a sense of acceptance and empathy. Creating a Safe Space : Auggie's family and friends create a safe and supportive environment for him to share his thoughts and feelings. This encourages him to open about his experiences without fear of rejection, contributing to a culture of empathy and understanding.
