For this week's discussion, reflect on the course with responses to the following: Discuss a few topics you now have a better understanding of compared to when the course began. How will you utilize the information we covered to be more effective at your job? How can the course can be improved? Hello Everyone, There were a multitude of topics discussed throughout FSMT320 that I learned valuable new information related to the Fire Protection that I will be able to apply throughout my career in the fire service. For example, the lesson on deciding whether total flooding or local application is the appropriate method of extinguishment taught us the importance saving property cost and using the most effective resources in the system design for a specific application. I will be able to utilize this information on scene in the future because many of these decisions can be made during pre-fire planning and walk throughs of priority buildings. However, if a decision of what extinguishment methods needs to be made during scene size up, I will be able to use the information learned to make the right decision. Moreover, the learning material in week 6 was valuable because I learned what NFPA has deemed the most common heat sources for residential fire emergencies in America. NFPA issued a report on April 2023 that states more than 26% of reported fires between 2016 and 2020 occurred in residential homes. In addition to that, 75% of civilian fire fatalities were also caused in residential homes. NFPA concludes that many of these fires had five causes. The primary sources of ignition in residential fires are cooking, heating, electrical distribution and lighting equipment, intentional fire setting, and smoking materials. I will be able to take this information and apply it to my job in the fire
service because knowing the most common risks, helps me understand what type of training I should focus on implementing for myself and my crew. Another interesting statistic that I learned that I was not aware of was the high number of suicides by arson in this country. I responded a structure fire recently that was investigated and found to be suicide by arson and I was surprised of the outcome. Now I know that this is a problem in this country and is not as rare as I assumed. It was a pleasure learning with each of you throughout FSMT320. Good luck on your future education and career goals. v/r Brandon Monte
