A. Reflect on how
each
of the following aspects contribute to your personal culture and influence your effectiveness as an educator in a classroom with a culturally diverse group of students:
1. importance of and family expectations for education
My family was very involved and supportive in my education and remains so today as I continue my studies and peruse a higher degree. One value they instilled in me when it came to school was to always try your best. Sometimes, your best is an A and being top in your class. Sometimes your best is a C and remaining focused even if you find the class content difficult and are struggling to grasp ideas. It is ok if your “best” looks different and is continuously changing. This family value has gown beyond my education, and has been important in my everyday life as well, as I try to remember, in all aspects, that I must try my best and accept that that may look different at times. I believe that my families influence on my education will help be become a better educator, especially in working with culturally diverse students. I will be able to instill this same value in them, encouraging them to constantly put forward their best effort. For example, an EL student who is trying their hardest to learn English may have strong performance on written assessments, but have a harder time exhibiting oral proficiency. As this student’s teacher, I different understand the importance in talking with this student how our “best” may look different in various skill sets, and they is ok as long as we continue working hard and remaining determined. 2. values pertaining to social or family groups
I was a student athlete through my entire education. Softball made up a large portion of my social life, and my teammates were my social group during the on and off season. As a team, it was important to stick to our values of respect, support, and kindness to be successful as a unit. These values will help be in being an educator for diverse students. For example, I will share the importance of respect in the classroom, especially in cases where there are multiple cultures in the classroom. I will also understand the importance of being supportive in my role as a teacher, as well as help my students be supportive to one another as students. For example, when working in small groups, students will know the importance in supporting one another to complete their task which may include doing their part/job or helping a fellow group member when needed. Kindness ties these values together. As a teacher, I will know how simple kindness goes a long well, and will instill that belief on my students so they may be kind to one another. 3. experiences with individuals from diverse backgrounds
I attended a very large high school that stood as the only high schools for 4 of the surrounding cities in the area. This contributed to the high level of diversity within the school. Students from many different cultures, races, religions, and socioeconomic backgrounds were joined under one roof receiving an education. Looking back, being exposed to this diversity was beneficially. However, in looking back I do remember that students did have a tendency to surround themselves with other students who shared similar backgrounds. While
I do think a part of these tendencies are a part of human nature, I think interacting with people who are different from you and your culture is an important part of growing as an individual. For this, I will make efforts as a teacher with a diverse classroom to have students
with different backgrounds to interact and learn from each other
B. Use
one
of the attached case studies -
Middle/High School Case Study
1. Discuss
each
of the following based on the chosen case study:
a. Discuss
one
characteristic of this student and how it affects learning.
Hannah is a student with a Specific Learning Disability (SLD) in Reading/Language Arts and Speech Impairment (SI). This characteristic if affecting her learning by impacting her reading skills. For example, Hannah has difficulty in her ability to answer complex comprehension questions. b. Discuss
one
environmental or family factor that impacts this student’s life and how it affects learning.
Hannah’s father works out of state, leaving her to handle many of the household responsibilities, including chores and caring for her grandmother. These responsibilities frustrate and overwhelm Hannah. These emotions carry over into school, as Hannah results to shutting down which negatively impacts her learning. For example, when Hannah has a hard time reading, she chooses to shut down and give up due to her frustration. c. Discuss
one
way utilizing equity pedagogy in the classroom can positively impact learning
outcomes for this student.
Because equity pedagogy. I think it would be best to provide Hannah with the least restrictive environment (LRE). Because Hannah does perform well over all in school by participating in the classroom routines and exhibiting verbalization and English skills, I do
not think Hannah needs to be pulled from her classrooms for the full day. However, I do think Hannah would benefit from being pull out of her regular education classes for reading. This will but Hannah in a smaller, quitter environment when working on her reading abilities reading so she can receive more direct support from the teacher, maybe
even a reading specialist. This will be most effective in the times Hannah becomes frustrated and wanted to result in shutting down as she has shown in the past.
