Week 2 discussion 2 Children learn as they play, and while playing, they learn how to learn . Think about the childhood games that you played and then complete the following: Share your favorite playtime activity with your classmates and explain why it was your favorite. Describe what you learned from your play and how it enhanced your development as a child. Using your own experience with play and the information in the reading, also describe five takeaways that you will use to support play and enhance the development of children under your supervision. Share your favorite playtime activity with your classmates and explain why it was your favorite: My favorite playtime activity was always the kitchen/dress up area! I would ask every afternoon during free play if I could go to that center because there were so many fun and interesting things there. There were so many different dress up options from princesses to super heroes and much more. The kitchen was incredible (for a 3-year-old) I remember it having so much pretend food, small table we used for “dinner”. I loved to cook and we’d also use the kitchen area as a supermarket. There were baskets we’d fill with different foods and say these items were what we were going to cook once we got home. Describe what you learned from your play and how it enhanced your development as a child: At the age of 3, honestly it was all play for me but there was so much more to it. I learned to use my imagination and be creative. Social skills were developed while simply playing with my friends. I was (still am) a bit shy but while we were pretending to be the mom, sister, brother, dad or baby, I allowed myself to open up and play my part. This center also allowed me to learn to play with others and take turns, I would cook for a few and then one of my classmates would have a turn cooking. Overall, this activity really allowed me to learn so many different things without even realizing at the times. Five takeaways that you will use to support play and enhance the development of children under your supervision: 1. I will allow my future students the opportunity to decide where and what they want to play with. 2. I will provide the children with lots of different toys and materials they could use. 3. Play is crucial for a child’s development; I will give my students the opportunity to use their imagination and encourage creativity. 4. I will work with my students’ families to explain why play is such an important part in their child’s development and encourage fun play activities they could do at home as well.
5. I will encourage my students to learn from each other, work together to solve problems, build structures for example in the block area. While in the kitchen area I will give them ideas like pretending they are at a restaurant or grocery store and each child could play a different role. Guided Response: Review your classmates’ posts and respond to at least two classmates by comparing their play experiences with your own . Point out any similarities, and discuss how your development was affected in either a negative or positive way. Compare your takeaways with your classmates’ and suggest additional ways they can support play. Hi Rachel! Awesome job on your post, I loved outdoor play as well especially growing up with two brothers I feel that I had my “tomboy” phase for a bit. I loved to be outside playing different sports and hanging with the boys mostly. I definitely think this type of play does encourage team work, I remember when we would play baseball and it would get so competitive trying to pick the best players for your team and making sure you all did what you needed to do. Active listening and paying close attention were needed at all times for sure! I do think this type of play helped my development in a positive way. I agree with all of your takeaways, especially where you said play ignites creativity and imagination. There is so much more to play than just play and there are so many different things you could learn from simply playing a sport or playing with specific toys. I would say a great way to support your future students is to ensure you have the materials you need for them in the classroom or outside area to help promote more learning through play opportunities. Hi Maxwell, I was a pleasure reading your post! I loved playing in the kitchen area as well and I remember pretending that the kitchen area was a restaurant! I loved cooking as well, although I would play multiple roles at a time sometimes. Besides the cook I would also pretend to be the waitress, I loved taking down the dinner order and then running over to cook the meals. This form of play definitely impacted my development in a positive way because it helped me become more social with my peers. I was very shy but once I was in my role there was no stopping me! I think this type of play was a favorite for so many children because it gave you the opportunity to pretend and use your imagination. I agree with the takeaways you shared in your post; play does play a crucial role in a child’s development. I would say a great way to support your future students is by meeting with their families before they begun school and then including them for family events and giving them the opportunity to be in the classroom to get to know you and who you are.
