How We Listen To Understand
I chose the movie scene Tadashi Is Here from the movie “Big Hero 6”, active listening is effectively demonstrated to express empathy. While Hiro is grieves for his brother Tadashi, Baymax, the healthcare robot, scans and listens to his emotional state with a gentle compassionate demeanor. By mirroring Hiro’s emotions and responding in a care and understanding manner, Baymax exemplifies the importance of empathy in building strong relationships.
According to the article by Peterson (2021) titled “The Empathy Trap”, active listening is a crucial
aspect of empathy and requires intentional effort to truly understand and relate to another person’s emotions. In this movie scene, Baymax showcases the value of active listening to a means to connect with others on a deeper level.
Moreover, research indicates that effective listening and empathy have numerous benefits, such
as improved communication, increased trust, and better relationships (Goleman, 2006). Baymax’s active listening helps Hiro feel heard and understood, creating a sense of trust and connection between the two characters.
In addition to Peterson’s article, Davis (1996) argues that empathy plays a critical role in social interactions and that individuals who are more empathetic are better able to understand and connect with others. This idea is reflected in the movie scene, where Baymax’s empathy allows him to connect with Hiro on a personal level.
In conclusion, the movie scene “Big Hero 6 – Tadashi Is Here” effectively showcases the use of active listening to express empathy, highlighting the importance of empathy in building strong and meaningful relationships. By understanding the connection between active listening, empathy, and relationship-building, individuals can improve their communication skills and foster more positive interactions with others.
