Installing Hope Instilling hope through counseling is imperative, say the authors of our classroom text reading for this week. Thomas and Sosin say that hope is critical to a satisfying and abundant life. 1 The authors use Proverbs 13:12 to describe what it is to delay hope in contrast to holding on to hope and its outcomes, a concept illustrated by Solomon saying that hope “is a tree of life” (Prov. 13:12b [KJV]). Hope means having the desire for something good in the future. Webster’s dictionary defines hope as, “To cherish a desire with anticipation.” 2 Hawkins and Clinton say that as counselors we are partners with God in the splendid and exciting journey of transforming lives. 3 In addition to being facilitators of God’s love, faith and hope, it is very important that we instill and encourage in a counselee that God is still at work in their lives and will complete His good will “until the day of Jesus Christ” (Phil.1:6b [KJV]). It is equally important to assure and encourage them that God holds a special plan and promise for the future (Thomas and Sosin 2011, 47). According to Hawkins and Clinton, one way to instill hope in the counselee would be to work on their foundation, which is a substance of high significance (Harkins and Clinton 2015,21). This is where getting an understanding of one’s worldview would help me as a counselor in leading and guiding them through a biblically worldview concerning their current situation, providing focus and clarity on their behavioral issues that are redeemable because of God’s unmatched grace (Thomas and Sosin 2011, 21).
