Week 2.5 COM/501 Yusef Cody
Socio-emotional changes within an individual experiencing adulthood include more complex and uncommon relationships to be formed through years of gathered experience. Emotional intelligence can be acquired through empathy, emotional awareness, and social standards. Depending on the individual, their emotional development in adulthood can regulate emotions rather than being impulsive allowing for better communication and expression of emotions. I personally found that I emotionally matured during my early adulthood years. During this period, emotional intelligence allows the adult to understand and reflect on how they treat others and how other individuals’ behavior reflects your own. One huge personal challenge that I faced during adulthood was the important decision of continuing my education. This choice to pursue further education was a very vital option considering my specific circumstance. My family was considered low income, or lower class. Because of this, my mother really pushed me in academics. When I graduated high school, I had no idea was I wanted to do as far as my career. I eventually settled on psychology because I found that to be the most interesting. It was a hard decision to go to college because my family never had someone complete college. I did not have enough money, I was unfamiliar with the school, and I had only my mom and sister for support. During this time, I experienced a lot of change that I can look back now and see that it was for the better. During my early adulthood, I experienced multiple development milestones that has led me to become a better person due to those hardships I faced. Concerning neuroticism, I personally had to learn how to control my emotions because my sadness and frustration would take over my whole emotional state and mindset immediately. I also had to become more social and open with people. I tend to be very introverted and not get too close to people, but I noticed very quickly that people will respond positively to an open person that genuinely cares. I had to practice conscientiousness in order to create an organized plan that will help me become who I want to be and steps to achieve my dream life.
