Lecture Notes Week 2
The difference between a goal and an objective is that a goal presents what the proposal would want to
accomplish, and the objectives are there to support those goals through measurable attainment
(Solomon, 2021). The goals of my program proposal would be to assist adolescents with strengthening
their mental well-being to prevent them from resorting to tobacco, vaping, and other substance use.
Some of the objectives would be to reach the goal through preventative education workshops and
presentations that provided literature, statistics, etc. on the dangers of tobacco, vaping, and substance
use, as well as providing coping strategies that teens can use to cope with stresses instead of reaching
for addictive substances. Also, strengthening self-esteem and relationships through communication
strategies would be another objective.
There are many programs for special needs youth but when it comes to special needs adults there is less
of a variety of programs. This can create challenges for parents and caretakers of special needs adults.
Parents and caretakers of special needs adults are often of retirement age and have trouble caring for
their special needs adult child due to aging, health, and other life struggles. Therefore, they need
additional help and support in order to care for their special needs adult child. Although there are adult
programs for special needs individuals, they may not have the level of support a person needs. Whether
those support needs are physical, cognitive, or health-related. The goal of this program would be to
provide families with flexibility and for it to be as inclusive as possible. At first, I considered making this
program an exclusive day program. However, after further research, I see that there is a need for more
full-time housing solutions for these individuals and their families. Some families may not have the
means, the finances, and the time to provide around-the-clock care to their special needs family
members. Therefore, a full-time residential-style living facility may be the best option for them and their
family members. With my proposed program I want there to be options for the family at the same
facility such as residential-style care or day programs In order to provide flexibility tailored to each
family. In my community, I am noticing that although there are residential facilities and day programs for
special needs adults, they are typically few and far between. Most challenging of all is the fact that most
of these programs are not local to the families that need them, therefore their loved ones are unable to
receive additional support or if they are in a residential facility they are not close to family. Many of
these programs are also in big cities such as Houston and other major cities.
