COM200: Week 1 Paper DeAnne Martin COM200: Interpersonal Communication Professor Donna Hernandez January 27, 2020
COM 200: Week 1 Paper Communication is an essential part of society. Whether you come from a different country or you are unable to hear, the ability to communicate what you are feeling or to get your thoughts across is no less important than the other. There are various ways of communication, whether by voice or body movement or even by sight, like through text. Communication is essential in understanding how to competently use basic interpersonal communication and block out the noise that they may face. According to Bevan (2020), six basic principles are used in order to have effective interpersonal communication. Those principals are taking responsibility for your behavior, trying to achieve shared meaning, acknowledging multiple views, respecting others and yourself, listening and evaluating the message before responding, and finally learning and practicing your communication skills. While watching A Failure to Communicate, I was able to see various examples for each of the six basic principles. The two most principles that stood out to me while watching the video was trying to achieve shared meaning and respecting yourself and others. During the video, I was able to identify achieving a shared meaning when I saw various attempts at the woman who was covered in a hijab trying to express her need to figure out how to get to her destination. The person she was trying to get direction from was unable to hear. Luck was not on their side as they tried to communicate. Not only did the person who was deafly unable to understand the woman in the hijab due to being unable to read lips, but they also came across issues involving the device used to convey the words to the deaf person. After trial and error, they were both able to finally understand each other through hand motions as well as pointing to the correct location the woman in the hijab was requesting.
