1 Communication Channels Reference Guide Name: Crystal Luciano Mass Communication The process of creating., sending, receiving, and analyzing messages to a large audience through verbal or written communication (master’s in communication, 2022), The Mass Communication channel can be used by communicators in several ways. Some ways are. using social media such as Twitter and Facebook. Communicators may share their beliefs by informing people and creating a public image. Common Types 1. Sound Mass Media: Communication via sound. a. Examples: The telegraph, radio (Primer on Communication Studies, n.d.), and podcasts. 2. Visual Mass Media: Visual form of communication. a. Examples: Television and movies (Primer on Communication Studies, n.d.). 3. Print Mass Media: Physical written forms of communication. a. Examples: Books, magazines, and newspapers (Primer on Communication Studies, n.d.). 4. Social Media: Websites and applications used to share content and create a social network. a. Examples: Twitter, TikTok, and Facebook. 5. Internet and Digital Media: Communications received through the Internet and other digital means. a. Examples: Smartphones, tablets, and E-readers. Interpersonal Communication Interpersonal communication is the process by which people exchange information, feelings, and meaning through verbal and nonverbal messages (Skillsyouneed.com, n.d.). Interpersonal communication Can be used to influence the attitudes and behaviors of others., form contacts and maintain relationships, make sense of the world and our experiences in it., and give and receive emotional support. Common Types 1. Verbal Communication: Conveys a message verbally face to face or over the phone. b. Examples: Conversation, speech, and presentation. (Business Terms, 2018). 6. Nonverbal communication: Communicates nonverbally to convey a message. a. Examples: Facial expressions, personal space, and gestures. (Cherry, 2023 7. Active Listening: Listening and watching for verbal and nonverbal cues. a. Examples: Showing empathy, summarizing to show understanding, and nonverbal cues such as nodding and eye contact (Doyle, 2022) Group Communication Group communication is the act of sending and receiving messages to multiple members of a group.
2 In a business environment, groups often use this type of communication to exchange ideas, determine goals, and motivate other members (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023). Common Types 1. In-person meetings: Gathering the group in one place to conduct a meeting (Indeed Editorial Teams, 2023). b. Examples: Weekly meetings, training sessions, and going over new projects. 8. Digital messages: messages sent via email or online messaging platforms (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023). a. Examples: Microsoft Teams, email, and Slack 9. Conference calls.
