COM 500 Internet Exploration Worksheet Directions: Utilize the worksheet below as a guide for exploring the World Wide Web and finding examples of international communication efforts. You are welcome to recreate the worksheet instead of utilizing the “actual” sample worksheet below. You do not have to type within the example below. It is provided as a guide. Example of international communication effort for humanitarian efforts or global good Example URL Copy and paste URL here: https://www.redcross.org/about-us/our-work/international- services/international-disasters-and-crises.html Provide a brief, one- paragraph recap of the sample provided. Include the following in your paragraph for each source: What is the topic of communication? Who is the target audience? What content and elements make the content powerful or enticing to viewers? How does this particular source create content that is applicable to a variety of diverse audience members by sharing information with an international audience? If content is not applicable to diverse audiences, explain why it is not. The American Red Cross is an organization that is there to help in any type of disaster, they are an international organization that is there to help. The online format is there to be able to ask for help, see how people can help, and where to go to help. The topic of communication for this would fall under the interaction model when talking about communication because communication can happen over time, and it allows the recipient to listen to what is needed and act when needed. The target audience would be geared more towards adults and anyone who needs help or wants to help. The fact that the organization is all about helping when a natural disaster happens is what is so powerful, they are truly there to help. The American Red Cross is a well-known organization that viewers can go to the website and see what they have done to help, and where viewers can go to help. This particular source creates content that is applicable to a variety of diverse audience members by just simply posting the stories of how they have helped all over the world. Different disasters all over the world are right on the homepage of their website.
Example of international communication effort for the spread of evil/hate Example URL Copy and paste URL Here: https://www.hate-speech.org/isis-and-the-big-three/ Provide a brief, one- paragraph recap of the sample provided. The topic of communication on the website above is essentially just a hate website, the title of the site is Hate Speech International, the investigate extremist and post articles and resources about their findings. The way they communicate would fall more under the action model of communication because the website is just a platform to just post things, and not much of a back and forth just a one-sided way of communicating. I would say the target audience of this site would be more geared towards adults more specifically adults who are into reading articles about instances like theories. This website is enticing to viewers by the way it looks but the type of things that are written on the website. Under the vision section of the website: “ Our vision is to elevate the public understanding of extremism as a phenomenon and to increase the overall ability, knowledge and will of media organizations to report on such matters.” (hatespeech.org). The first sentence of the vision says it all for what the website stands for and is about. There are many articles on this website that are all about the extremism that is happening all over the world so they have some very diverse audience members and can be viewed as international audiences since the articles are from so many different stories.
