Norm-Referenced
Standardized Assessments
Norm-reference tests refer to the
standardized tests that every student in
each school must take during the school
year. With these assessments, scores are
compared to each other for varied
reasons. One reason is to compare each
students score to find score-based
differences among the students, another
is to determine where there should be
improvements made to continuous
instruction and learning, and finally to
evaluate the instruction students have
already received Popham, 2016). Another
reason for norm-referenced standardized
tests is to determine whether students are
struggling and where they may be
struggling to help get them support.
Examples of norm-referenced
standardized testing include:
Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT)
American College Test (ACT)
Arizona’s Academic Standards
Assessment (AASA)
Language Sampling
Language sampling is taking a sample of
what a child is saying during a
conversation or while playing. When a
child is playing or having a conversation,
there is certain information that
speech/language pathologists (SLPs) can
gain about the child’s use of language.
These would include the complexity of
words they use, their narrative skills, and
direction-following abilities (Prath, 2018).
The length of the sample depends on
several factors as well. The length is
based on the child’s language level, their
