5-1 Case Study Communication and social media
1.
The case only covers the surface of how the changing social media landscape is
introducing challenges for managing employees. What additional incidents have you
observed? What other challenges face organizations dealing with online interactions
among employees, or employees and third parties?
Having the privacy to write about all parts of one's life on social media is one of the challenges
that employees have. Most individuals now use social media as a platform to express their
opinions, share details about their personal life, or upload images. Employers are now evaluating
candidates for jobs based on their social media presence. Social media profiles are now being
examined by employers during background checks. One of the employers who routinely checks
social media accounts is my present one. A few assistants were really cautioned by a director to
keep our Facebook and Instagram profiles hidden for this reason.
The use of social media by workers while at work, however, is a problem for businesses. Social
media has grown so dependent on its users that they access it on their phones or work PCs.
Accessing these sites from a workplace computer or network may compromise customer privacy.
Working for our towns Elementary School values its privacy and the privacy of our students and
educators. If anyone in our district office were to make certain things public, that could be bad
for many people and could pull into question the integrity of our district. This fact is prohibited,
and all employees are aware of the company's social media guidelines and the consequences of
violating them.
2.
How open are you online? Why do you take this approach?
Sometimes, in my opinion, social media is misused by using it as a kind of revenge or retaliation,
which is immoral in my opinion and goes against the purpose of the platform. I think the female

computer developer ought to have talked to the two males about what she overheard.
Alternatively, she may have made a complaint and brought it up with their employer first.
However, by turning to social media first, she exposed herself to the internet's scrutiny. Her
response to what she overheard may have been justified. On social media, there are a lot of
opinionated users that take pleasure in harassing users who have different views than their own.
Sadly, she and her firm were assailed by these people. As a last resort, use social media.
3.
How do you think the incident with the conference attendees could have been
handled differently? What should the respective companies have done?
She shouldn't have been fired, in my opinion. Employees are unaware of the extent to which
their personal online presence may impact the operations of their organization. Even though the
woman developer's objectives were not to hurt her employer, by posting on social media, the
action had a negative impact on the business, and she was fired. She was employed at a business
that made it clear to other female coders that they were on their own.
4.
How do you think companies should respond to social media and the online presence
of their employees? What should a social media policy look like?
If utilized appropriately, social networking sites may be effective tools for information exchange.
Not using social media appropriately might expose the company to additional risk, so keep that
in mind. A social media policy should look like the points below.
I.
Abstain from posting or bringing up any customer or company information that is
deemed sensitive or secret under this Code.
II.
You should stay away from conducting your regular job duties on social networking
platforms.
